Editorial reviews

Editors Select, February 2015 - If you know me, you know I was obsessed with the TV show Lost. I'm talking "hours of theorizing on a whiteboard after each episode" obsessed. So when I heard that A.G. Riddle's new book Departure was drawing comparisons to my favorite show, I knew I had to listen. I was pleased to find that while there are some obvious similarities - a plane crash, a mystery, characters who are not what they seem, etc. - the similarities stop there, and Riddle's story quickly takes on its own identity with a unique, tantalizing mystery and plenty of action. Nicola Barber and Scott Aiello are an amazing cast for this book, which shifts perspectives between a male and female lead. Fast-paced, intriguing, and smart, I encourage all my fellow Lost-ies to check this out. Sam, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

En route to London from New York, Flight 305 suddenly loses power and crash-lands in the English countryside, plunging a group of strangers into a mysterious adventure that will have repercussions for all of humankind.

Struggling to stay alive, the survivors soon realize that the world they've crashed in is very different from the one they left. But where are they? Why are they here? And how will they get back home?

Five passengers seem to hold clues about what's really going on: writer Harper Lane, venture capitalist Nick Stone, German genetic researcher Sabrina Schröder, computer scientist Yul Tan, and Grayson Shaw - the son of a billionaire philanthropist.

As more facts about the crash emerge, it becomes clear that some in this group know more than they're letting on - answers that will lead Harper and Nick to uncover a far-reaching conspiracy involving their own lives. As they begin to piece together the truth, they discover they have the power to change the future and the past - to save our world...or end it.

Critic reviews

"Well-constructed and tightly-wound as a fine Swiss watch, Departure has non-stop action, an engaging plot and, of course, wheels within wheels." (Diana Gabaldon, author of the Outlander series)

My first all 5 star rating

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The story line was good, an easy read. Bold interesting idea of a future world but what truly enhanced the experience was the performance by Scott Aiello. Within the first few sentences I was hooked. His voice brought out one of the main characters perfectly!!

Better than average

This book was better than average for a science fiction/futuristic you adventure story. I am enjoyed the two readers.

Interesting story

Narration was great. Story was interesting but for serious time travel enthusiasts the plot has holes that don't jive with paradox theories. If you just listen for the storyline between the characters it's a good listen and the narrators do a great job.

what about your heartrate?

I have read many "end times" books. it's interesting to read the different interpretations of change. "alas babylon" is a character study with heart. the" surviving home" series condems others for looting, killing, when the heroes do the same things. right is on their side. this book......goes into such minute detail that I am surprised the heart and respiration are not given.

as with many end times stories, the main character is a somewhat two dimensional figure, saving the others. maybe I slept thru the nuances of his person.

it just didn't resonate with me.

Outside looking In

What made the experience of listening to Departure the most enjoyable?

Not knowing where we would end up. The story takes a turn and the characters have to make hard choices. Ultimately having to decide if they were going to go with or against their instincts.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Harper, she was weak, strong, scared, and brave all at the same time. Never allowing any emotion from keeping her from taking that next step...

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Tomorrow's just a memory...

Any additional comments?

Good book for a road trip...

it is not lost.

What made the experience of listening to Departure the most enjoyable?

Time travel, plane crash, alternate realities, strange deaths, jungles, islands...sounds like a Lost spinoff...but it is not. This is a nice serial scifi with a little bit of character depth. just enough action and intrigue and would make a nice Saturday afternoon movie. The closest story line I can think of is from the (70's I think) movie called Millennium.

A good introduction to the author

I decided to listen to this book after reading mixed reviews about the Atlantis books. I am glad I did. I enjoyed the plot twists and the development of the characters. I will now take time to listen to all three of the Atlantis books. I enjoy science fiction that makes the reader think and that has complex storylines instead of just gory descriptions of endless battles. Both narrators did a wonderful job portraying the characters.

Great entree into science fiction

I liked the "Lost" style story. Wish the female character was a little preoccupied with whether she would find a man in the future when the world is crumbling but still an entertaining story.
