to defect.
But I was young and wasn’t going to be deterred. When you’re
young, you don’t believe the bad possibilities apply to you.
They’re for everyone else.
I thought of the rewards. I would live in the West. I would work
and make money. I would do what I wanted, when I wanted. What
more could an ambitious young man ask for?
Once Genu came running to me, I was more concerned with
implementing his escape plan than with the fact that I was now
harboring a fugitive. He knew the way, he had the plan, and now
he had little choice but to try again. He was finished in the motherland.
Genu’s impending doom would be the catalyst for my
long-awaited escape.
We devised a plan, revised it, and ultimately, carried it out.
What happened over the coming years was nothing like I envisioned.
