Publisher's Summary
In the mangroves of Belize, something ancient lies hidden beneath the roots. And when it surfaces, so too will one of man's baser inclinations. The root of all evil: greed.
Boone Fischer and Emily Durand have enjoyed months of quiet on the tiny island of Caye Caulker. After surviving Hurricane Irma and a mountaintop madman, the two divemasters have finally begun to relax. Big mistake.
Following on the fins of the best-selling thrillers Deep Shadow and Deep Cut, this third Caribbean action-adventure thriller in The Deep Series takes the listener on a whirlwind tour of Belize. From the offshore cayes to distant lagoons, from tropical rivers to jungle ruins lost in time, Boone and Emily race to untangle themselves from a deadly plot that threatens to shatter their lives.
Critic Reviews
"High Adventure Under Pressure! Nobody does underwater action like Nick Sullivan." (Cap Daniels, best-selling author of the Chase Fulton Novels)
"Realistic And Suspenseful. 5 out of 5 stars! Sullivan is able to bring an insane amount of realism to his books that make them jump off the page. The emotional attachment I have to these characters keeps growing with each book. Each story they become more and more real. Another great addition to the series...the setting, characters, and suspense were all phenomenal. One of the best things with having a professional narrator write his own books is that he is able to narrate them as well, and is able to add that bit of depth to the performance that you wouldn't get if he didn't narrate it himself. Honestly, his narration of Emily is almost better than Boone. Part of it is the writing, but there were numerous scenes that had me in stitches and that was mainly due to the combination of Sullivan's writing and narration." (Brian's Book Blog)
"If you are one who adores well-written and expertly researched action adventures which can stand alongside the excitement and thrills of an Indiana Jones movie, you will want to have a listen to this new audiobook. As I have said in my previous reviews of Mr. Sullivan's works, I find that he provides a level of edutainment (education and entertainment) not often delivered from other authors I have listened to. Mr. Sullivan started as a narrator with his deep and smooth voice, and from there branched out into writing. His ability to both write and narrate is what makes these books in this series worth listening too. He knows how to bring the characters to life because he created them, and he also knows why they act the way they do in specific situations." (Quella Reviews)

Great fun, entertaining and suspenseful!!!!
Deep Roots is the third book in the Deep series. This series does not need to be listened to in order but I think the reader will appreciate the developing characters and relationships much more if they are.
This book is a thrill a minute! It is very fast paced with plenty of action. The two protagonists already have a history of violent encounters and both are experiencing symptoms of PTSD. When taking a group of tourists cave diving they become friendly with a wealthy business man. What they don’t know is he’s a dealer in illegal antiquities. Nothing good can come from this.
Nick Sullivan does his own narration brilliantly.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Loved it!!!
I was super excited to get another book of Boone and Emily's diving adventures! Deep Roots almost had an Indiana Jones feel to it, if Indiana Jones were in a more tropical location and liked to scuba dive. This series gets better and better with each book! Aside from enjoying a great story, I've also learned a bit about the local culture and a bit of history in these islands. It does help that the Author has first hand knowledge of these areas! Nick Sullivan not only wrote this fantastic series, he narrates it as well! He does an outstanding job with all the different voices and accents! I'm super excited to hear that Boone and Emily will be back soon in another book!

Realistic And Suspenseful
This is the third book in the Caribbean Dive Adventures/The Deep and it starts off with a bang. Right away a dead body is found and Boone and Emily are trying not to get dragged into the investigation… but they find a little jade-like figurine and they’re both intrigued. Little did I know this was only the beginning…
Sullivan is able to bring an insane amount of realism to his books that make them jump off the page. Deep Roots was no different. This time we’re treated to diving in Belize, with some cave diving thrown in. What a thrill! Sullivan throws us off the boat and into the deep end so to speak with this one. Causing Boone and Emily to face their fears and face a new enemy.
The emotional attachment I have to these characters keeps growing with each book. Each story they become more and more real. They have problems from their former run ins with other bad guys. They have panic attacks and PTSD when certain objects appear. It’s just another layer that Sullivan adds to the stories to take them from good to great.
I can’t go into the main antagonist in Deep Roots too much but I thought that Sullivan did a great job setting the scene. He caused a massive amount of it but kept writing it in a way where I would second guess myself. I always try and guess the ending of books and I got some of this right but other parts I was way off. I enjoy that – I can kind of know where the book is going but also be caught off guard.
Overall, this was another great addition to the series and the setting, characters, and suspense were all phenomenal. I can’t wait to see where Boone and Emily take us next… I mean where Nick Sullivan takes us next. I might have to find a way to pick his brain and see what other tropical locations he’s dived.
One of the best things with having a professional narrator write his own books is that he is able to narrate them as well. What you get is a narrator that knows exactly how to narrate a book... reading his own book. This allows the performance to really jump off the page in exactly the manner that Sullivan was thinking when he wrote it. He knows exactly how Boone and Emily sound like. Knows what each "bad guy" would talk like. And is able to add that little bit of depth to the performance that you wouldn't get if he didn't narrate it himself. Honestly, his narration of Emily is almost better than Boone. Part of it is the writing, but there were numerous scenes (I'm looking at you British pronunciation of Jaguar) that had me in stitches and that was mainly due to the combination of Sullivan's writing and narration.

The best yet in this series
Nick Sullivan's Caribbean Dive Adventures just keep getting better -- this is the third book (Book 1, Deep Shadow & Book 2, Deep Cut ) and it's best yet in both plot and narration. I cannot wait to dive into the next book (see what I did there?). The serenity and beauty of the island setting juxtaposed with the dark goings-on underwater and in the criminal underworld make for an action-packed, high interest story you'll read straight through.
Sullivan masters the world building – the paradise setting of Belize and its sparkling waters draws in readers, but something sinister is lurking beneath the surface, and readers can’t help but stick around to find out exactly what it is.
DEEP ROOTS is packed with quirky characters that readers will love and villains that readers will loathe. The relationship between main characters Emily and Boone continues to gel, and I appreciate that Sullivan shows how it's truly a partnership. The author portrays a healthy relationship and the importance of communication, particularly for this couple who has been through some pretty harrowing experiences and both suffer a bit of PTSD. Best part for this reader? Though this relationship is central to the story, and though there's a very HEA, the focus of the story is the action, adventure, and suspense -- not the romance. Hooray!
The author is again the narrator of the audio book of DEEP ROOTS and he perfectly voices the characters. There is never any confusion about who is talking (again, kudos to the writing), and he does some great island accents and in this story, he has gotten Emily's voice just right. The dueling accents of Emily (London) and Boone (American) was really fun and I enjoyed the "pronunciation denunciation."
I was thrown by some unexpected and unnecessary F-bombs, which are always more startling to hear than read, but overall, this is a well-written, well-voiced story start to finish. Readers can jump in on this series at any point, but as is the case with most series books, it's always the best experience when you can start at the beginning to get the backstory and watch characters (and author skills) grow.
Highly recommend the book and the series, and I'm ready to start book four, DEEP DEVIL. Happily, it’s already out in the world, and if I play my cards right, I might finish it just in time for the fifth book. (Because the series MUST go on!)
