Publisher's summary

It's '86, the era of Pop Rocks, Jelly shoes, and big hair bands. Rachael O'Brien's freshman plan seems simple: Attend a southern college away from her hometown of Canton, Ohio, earn a degree, party, and meet cute guys-hopefully acing the latter two.

But being threatened by a jealous She-Devil, avoiding the advances of a 30-something redneck, and discovering an art fraud scheme mess with her "to do" list. On top of her troubles at school, Rachael finds herself forging a new relationship with her emotionally shaken father after Mom abandons the family to pursue a psychic calling. Bad decision-making, law-bending behavior, and surprise romances make freshman year challenging in Paisley Ray's Deep Fried and Pickled quick-witted, south-of-the-Mason-Dixon romp.

LOVED It!

Any additional comments?

This is a great book; this is the first book in the Rachael O’Brien Chronicles written by Paisley Ray and narrated by Suzanne Cerreta. Bad decision-making, law-bending behavior, and surprise romances make freshman year challenging for Rachael.

This book has a wonderful story and well developed characters. This book will keep you reading long into the night. This was such a great read and full of surprises.

The narrator Suzanne Cerreta did a wonderful job with this book. She did a great job with the different voices of each character in this book. It was very easy to listen to and I didn’t want to stop listening until the end.

If you are looking for a great book with well-developed characters then you need to listen to this book. I am looking forward to listening to the next book by this author and narrator.

Great summer listen/read

I really enjoyed this book, great characters that were likeable and held true to themselves as the book went on. The story was a doozy!! I didn't want to stop listening as it progressed, try it, you will like it! just enough of a mystery to keep you involved without saying...really, like that would happen...things made sense and flowed to the very end!!!

Fun Young Adult Mystery

I enjoyed listening to Deep Fried and Pickled. It's technically a young adult mystery but the mystery is just a small part of the book.

Rachael O'Brien is from Ohio and is attending a college in the South. That hit home with me because my family moved from Chicago to Tennessee in the 70's. Talk about culture shock! It has always interested me how different areas of the country have different slang words. Paisley Ray did a good job at using some of those. For example, how is Rachael supposed to know a BJ is Bartles & James?

The story is more about Rachael's first year in college than it is a mystery. She quickly makes friends with some of the girls in her dorm. Some of the situations that they get into are hilarious. Poor Rachael has the goal of losing her virginity but something always seems to get in the way of that.

I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a good job overall. I did have trouble telling two of the girls apart.

I recommend Deep Fried and Pickled to anyone who wants to read a feel good mystery based in the 80's.

Love the narrator and the story

Rachel obrien knows one thing and one thing only. Life is about to change. As a college freshman in 1986, she is prepared for new adventures, new friends and new stresses. What she was not prepared for are the following: her mom walks out on her dad to be a psychic in Arizona far from her home town of Canton, Ohio, her roommates boyfriend is a loser, and oh yeah that's right there is that whole art fraud situation she has going on.
All she wanted was to meet a nice boy and get her groove thing moving but instead she's tied up in an art fraud mystery while she beats off Katie Lee's strange 30 something friend's advances. It's turn after turn, adventure and misadventure one after another. One thing is certain, life as she knew it is never going to be the same!

SO MUCH FUN with a little mystery!

I had so much fun listening to this audiobook with all its fun loving characters and their stories. I wished I could go to college with these girls, party with these girls and be friends with theses girls. I love how Paisley Ray added the mystery along with the TWO SHE DEVILS! A bunch of different plots all in one. I can't wait to see what's next for Rachael O'Brien and her friends in the next book of the series.

Love this series!!

What did you love best about Deep Fried and Pickled?

This series will have you laughing out loud. Rachel is a college freshmen in this first book. She is an art history major and trouble seems to follow her everywhere she goes. The narrator does a great job changing her tone for each character. Give it a try. I promise you will want to listen to the entire series and you will become a huge Rachael O'Brien fan just like me.

Rachel just makes me smile!

What did you love best about Deep Fried and Pickled?

Every book I read about Rachel & her friends makes me feel like I'm revisiting fond memories of hair raising adventures in college. Paisley Ray evokes such warmth & nostalgia & genuine caring in her writing that even danger draws tension but not palpitations. The zaniness, circuitous routes to exploring love, soul-searching for who & what they're meant to be & be doing...I don't find it angst-laden, but humour-filled.

What about Suzanne Cerreta’s performance did you like?

She is 1 of my favourite female readers & I wish she had a larger collection of books in my preferred genres. She's exceptionally pleasant to listen to & skilled in crafting distinct voices & accents for the host of characters.

Any additional comments?

I'm so glad I stumbled onto this first book. I bought & listened to 7 in 1 weekend! I'm so glad the adventure continues.

Going to College with Rachel O;Brien is A Hoot

Lots of fun getting immersed in the wacky world of the story. There's plenty of wit and humor woven into Rachel O'Brien's misadventures and the unique bunch of characters she encounters. Listening to this book can provide a great antidote to the tension of rush hour traffic.

Everybody came to life!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I absolutely would recommend this audiobook to a friend! The book itself was excellent, but the audiobook just put everything together.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Katie Lee is my favorite, she makes me laugh out loud and makes everybody step outside their box. Rachel would be so boring without her.
