Publisher's summary

"How do we become who we are in the world? We ask the world to teach us."

On her 120-acre homestead high in the Colorado Rockies, beloved writer Pam Houston learns what it means to care for a piece of land and the creatures on it. Elk calves and bluebirds mark the changing seasons, winter temperatures drop to 35 below, and lightning sparks a 110,000-acre wildfire, threatening her century-old barn and all its inhabitants. Through her travels from the Gulf of Mexico to Alaska, she explores what ties her to the Earth, the ranch most of all. Alongside her devoted Irish wolfhounds and a spirited troupe of horses, donkeys, and Icelandic sheep, the ranch becomes Houston’s sanctuary, a place where she discovers how the natural world has mothered and healed her after a childhood of horrific parental abuse and neglect.

In essays as lucid and invigorating as mountain air, Deep Creek delivers Houston’s most profound meditations yet on how "to live simultaneously inside the wonder and the grief...to love the damaged world and do what I can to help it thrive."

The most beautiful book I’ve ever read

Deep Creek is the most beautiful book I’ve ever had the joy of listening to. It’s early to make this call, but it might be my favorite book of 2019. I can’t imagine topping it.

It’s a beautiful memoir of Colorado, whales, dogs, wildfire, love, and loss. It’s brought me to my tears and stopped me in my tracks time and time again. Please read it.

I Loved This Book! Wholly Inspiring!

I love this book and this newly discovered Author!! Every sentence is akin to poetry for my soul! Her descriptions of the wilds of nature in and through her many purposeful journeys are masterful! So immersive is her imagery that it soothes the longing in me for places and experiences I've always wanted but never attained to firsthand. She aptly, beautifully and amazingly conveys the pure, honest, love, therapy and healing one can have with their canine companions. Her appreciation for the land and the workings of nature, the restorative powers and tenacity of the natural world to adapt and thrive in the face of utter abuse are the perfect metaphor for her own life. I'm deeply moved by this book, the Author's narration is also superb. This memoir steals the Top Position among my favorites now.

Heart opening

I LOVED this book!!!
I have been trying to find a good soul-touching book for a few months now on Audible and this one just tipped my world upside down. If you have ever loved a dog, a horse, or just nature in general, or want to, this book will make your heart sing. Make you want to hug your dog, go for a walk, go camping. I cried multiple times just at how beautifully Pam Houston worded things, and how relatable this book is. If I could give it 10000 stars I would.

Part of the problem

So this was a big disappointment. I thought I was going to listen to a book from someone who makes a living on a ranch with all the problems and hard work that comes with it.
While there are some good parts. She goes on and on about the dangers that threaten the earth and more locally her ranch.
Big words about climate change. yet from the summary:
'Through her travels from the Gulf of Mexico to Alaska, she explores what ties her to the Earth, the ranch most of all'

Basically she travels by plane constantly. To visit places and to teach. We are all hypocrites somewhat. Our ideals are better than our actual behavior. But I think miss Houston is a caricature in that sense. If all people of the earth lived as her there would be no earth (with humans anyway). Practice what you teach/preach.
Be the solution, not part of the problem.

About the narration. It starts out okay. A little bit flat. Later on, she sighs constantly... like saying: 'another chapter...ughh'.

Pam Houston is a beautiful author and narrator!

I adored every second of this book. The honesty and beauty in her voice and in her story moved me. Her descriptive writing made me physically yearn to be back home in the glorious Colorado Rockies. I cannot wait to read everything else she has published- like, immediately! I have found a new favorite!

Could have been great

But wasn’t. Loved the parts of the book about her experiences on her ranch. Didn’t need to be preached at about environmentalism. That tidbit wasn’t in the liner notes.

More Memoir and Less Report Reading

I loved Pam Houston’s willingness to share her story. Thank you for the opportunity to learn from you and to appreciate the world around me more. I didn’t love the many minutes of reading logs written by the forest service or historical documents. More memoir and less report reading please.

Lacked

As a farmer I love listening to other farmers experiences and hear how they manage the unexpected but this was more focused on environmentalism than about experiences on the ranch.

Maybe better as a physical book

I was super excited to listen to this after all the awesome reviews, but just couldn't get into this audiobook. I finished it, hoping that at some point I would change my mind. I like that Pam narrates her own book, but her voice sounds very monotone throughout and my mind drifted off easily. Perhaps it's better as a physical book.

What a Life

Thank you, Pam, for sharing your ranch with all of us through this book. I loved every word. I cried, I laughed, I dreamed with you.
I hope one day I can find such a special place to let me horses grow old, my dogs run free and my goats hang out with me.
