Publisher's Summary

The king of farce strikes a royally hard slap to the face with this gloriously funny study of the life of Paul Pennyfeather, an Oxford expulsion who finds himself a job as a teacher, only to discover that his fellow educators are no better than a rag-tag bunch of oddballs, rascals, and even criminals! As an attractive and wealthy parent of one of the pupils is thrown into the mix, along with the chaos of the school sports day, no one is safe, least of all Paul Pennyfeather.

An Amazing Barrage of Characters

What about Rik Mayall’s performance did you like?

Mayall's range of expression and pathos was perfect; no surprise to those familiar with his work.

Why abridged?

It's an enduring mystery to me that so few of Waugh's books are available in audio, and then only in abridged form. Waugh is the finest writer of intelligent humour in the last century, so this lacuna is all the more puzzling.

Funny!

Great story, fantastic narration, just a shame it's abridged! Rik Mayall remains the best narrator ever.

Disliked

Not funny. Maybe it was funny at the time. It was also too short to waste a credit on and I found Rik Mayall irritating (RIP).
