Publisher's Summary

A runaway spell is the most dangerous weapon of all.

Vampires aren't supposed to feel anything beyond hunger and bloodlust, but Viktor still feels a whole lot. He hates what he's become, but there's no escape. Not from the dying city smothering him, or from his maker, an arrogant tyrant who demands absolute loyalty.

Ketha's a shifter and a seer, for all the good it does her. Not enough magic is left to power much of anything. In a rare victory, an image forms in her glass, and she understands how magic broke the world - and how to fix it. The only antidote is an alliance with vampires, but she can't convince anyone to cooperate.

Desperate and trapped, she turns what's left of her magic on the vampire assigned to lock her away. He's different, not quite as callous or aloof as his kin. It's a gamble, but she's out of options. Maybe magic can't bail them out, but love might be able to salvage what's left.

Such a great concept

I was really impressed by the creativity of this book, the idea of a magical spell gone wrong and slowly causing the end of the world was well crafted and not something I've seen before.

I really liked Victor, he's definitely not a stereotypical vampire, he's still fairly human really and that creates a conflict with how he's expected to behave.

Ketha is an excellent lead female character, she's strong, confident, and capable. Plus the chemistry between her and Victor adds a much needed lighter element to the story, and they're just so cute together.

I loved the ending, it made the story feel complete and yet teased me into wanting to know what happens next.

The narration is well done, the character voices are distinct and consistent although the accents came across as a bit odd sometimes, the delivery did a good job of conveying tension and emotion.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

Color Me Surprised

I got this story via audiobook boom and this is my voluntary review. This book was not what I expected. The story begins as a surprise and continues throughout. Vampires, shifters, and humans trapped on an island by some force that was unleashed because of greed and lust. One man who was captured and turned into a vampire and one shifter woman are destined to save them all. This is not your typical paranormal book and sheds light on that world in such a different manner that I actually listened in one sitting. I cleaned, exercised, rested, and cooked with my earphones in my ear. It was worth it. If you want another twist in the paranormal world then give this one a try. The narrator will keep you in the story from beginning to end.

Shifter use magic to protect themselves and the humans
Viktor had once been a human and was now a vampire, he hates it. His maker was evil.
They catch a shifter named Ketha a wolf shifter and a seer. She has seen how to fix the world if she could just get the vampires on the same plan.

Magical Vampire Tale

I loved everything about this first in series. The story grabs you from the start and keeps your attention with interesting and in depth characters. I liked the dystopian setting and the magical elements through out the story. The narrator did a fantastic job bringing the story and characters to life. I look forward to more in this series

The narration threw me off the story

I received a copy of this audiobook at no charge by the author, narrator, and/or publisher.

The story started off really interesting to me and I liked the characters. Somewhere along I started losing interest in the story. I'm not sure if the story got boring to me or if I lost interest in the narrators voice. I didn't love the narration. It didn't really draw me in. But I think it may be the reason I didn't like the story all that much.

Ann Gimpel's writing is great and I thought the story was really interesting. I loved that vampires and shifters had to work together for survival. The characters were all great interesting.

Magic, shifters, and vampires oh my

The only negative I have of this book is the ending I feel that some of it wasn’t really needed and sort of dragged on. Having said that I really enjoyed the overall because I was hooked from the very beginning and there was definitely lots of good action and the characters developed very well. I loved both the magic aspect and how the situation that our main characters find ourselves in being portrayed. Having both vampires and shifters were definitely a plus. Great book overall.

Pretty good.

I will start by saying thee narration was solid, and at a good pace. The story itself, in my opinion, might tend to lend itself more to a female audience, but that is just my opinion. I found the story compelling and engaging. Fans of horror will not be disappointed. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Great start to a new fantasy series

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This book has a really interesting premise that I thought was pretty well executed. The narration os great and really brings the characters to life. I like paranormal/urban fantasy stories that blend several of the character "class" types (i.e. vampires, shifters, magic users, etc.) into one cohesive story. I thought this was a great start to a new series and am looking forward to more to come.

A different type of shifter/vampire story

This was not the usual dangerous shifter and powerful vampire book I am used to. In this story they are struggling to survive and have to fight to overcome what seems like an unbeatable force. This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
