Alma Lee isn’t expecting much at the party she has been invited to. The host is one Baron Edmund Inglethorpe, a rather conventional Victorian aristocrat. Things get more exciting when a gruesome murder unfolds and Alma is forced into a central role in the investigation, uncovering secrets and deceit. With her own freedom at stake, Alma is willing to do anything to prove her innocence to the world.

I'm a lifelong avid reader of fiction who has always insisted on having a physical book in my hands. However, I drive long distances quite often and decided to give an audio book a try for the first time. I love murder mysteries and detective thrillers, but haven't read anything old-timey before.

I am so glad I took the chance not only on an audio book but also on this particular book, because I loved it! The characters are richly developed, and the descriptive writing really helps you feel like you are living this tale and walking these foggy streets and venturing through these Victorian homes right along with the characters.

The book narrator was exceptional, she had different voices and accents (British, Irish, Scottish) that truly fit the characters, and she didn't just read the story; she performed it. She changed her cadence and tone in different in different ways to fit the emotions in the scene (it reminded me of how in singing you change your breath and volume and tone to draw out the emotion of a song). There were moments when my heart was literally pounding because I was so nervous about what was going to happen next!

I absolutely loved this book, and when I found out it was written by a 17 year old young man who was a first time author I was amazed! He wrote this in such a way that you really understand the depth of all the characters, and there are so many twists and turns where you think you know who the killer is only to have that changed in a flash, and it ends how you never would guessed!

This book is an absolute gem. I listened to it on a 4.5 hour drive and when I got home I listened to the rest immediately because it was one of those that if you had the book in hand, you would read through the night as you wouldn't be able to put it down. If you love murder mysteries, detective stories, thrillers, or even just anything set in a historical era, you will not be disappointed!

My first audio book!
