For fans of the compelling critical and investigative style of best-selling authors Graham Hancock and Brian Muraresku, the first detailed account of the history and science of the world’s strangest and most mysterious drug: DMT. This program is read by the author and features a foreword written and read by British journalist and author Graham Hancock.
DMT is the world’s strangest and most mysterious drug, inducing one of the most remarkable and yet least understood of all states of consciousness. This common plant molecule has, from ancient times to the modern day, been used as a tool to gain access to a bizarre alien reality of inordinate complexity and unimaginable strangeness, populated by a panoply of highly advanced, intelligent, and communicative beings entirely not of this world.
In a story that begins in the Amazonian rainforests and ends somewhere beyond the stars, Andrew Gallimore presents the first detailed account of the discovery of DMT and science’s continuing struggle to explain how such a simple and common plant molecule can have such astonishing effects on the human mind. The history of the drug involves many fascinating characters from the scientific and literary worlds — including legendary ethnobotanist Dr. Richard Schultes; renegade beat writer and drug aficionado William S. Burroughs; philosopher and raconteur Terence McKenna; and the high priest of the 1960s psychedelic revolution, Dr. Timothy Leary. In the end, the story of DMT forces us to reconsider our most basic assumptions about the nature of reality and our place within it.

As a devoted follower of Dr. Gallimore’s work, I’ve hunted down and listened to every podcast I could find where he’s a guest. His insights into DMT, entheogens, and the interdimensional architecture of consciousness have long fascinated me—especially as someone who unwittingly experienced DMT firsthand in September of 1992. This audiobook feels like the culmination of everything I’ve been hoping he would one day articulate in full.
Gallimore not only delivers rich, deeply thought-provoking content—he also narrates it himself with clarity, presence, and surprising warmth. His performance as a non-fiction narrator is impressive, and hearing these complex ideas in his own voice makes the journey all the more intimate and illuminating.
If you are at all intrigued by psychedelics, consciousness, or the strange architecture of other dimensions, Death By Astonishment is essential listening. I’m so taken with it that I’m ordering a hard copy for my personal library to revisit, underline, and reference again and again.
This is more than just an audiobook. It’s an invitation to peer beyond the veil—with one of the greatest psychonaut-scientists of our time as your guide.

This one is quite word-intense... but still an exciting story on quite an amazing subject.
The final conclusion

With so much misinformation being proliferated nowadays on social media regarding DMT, Gallimore brings his extensive research and scientific background to bear, yet maintains a perspective that leaves the door open for the consideration of other explanations beyond the human scientific development level.
