Old gods die hard.

Professional necromancer Lazarus Kerrigan knows all too well that the Big Easy is anything but. Crime is up, business is down, and someone--or something--crushed an innocent girl to death on his doorstep.

After the search for the murderer brings the police to his front door, Laz must prove his innocence by hauling in the real killer with help from the dead.

When the sun sets in New Orleans, more than monsters go bump in the night... And what Laz awakens in his quest for answers might just get him--and everyone else in town--killed.

good but to be honest

First off let's start with the fact I scored this book for $2.45 with a coupon I had from audible, so i was willing to take a chance on it. While the first book does not have the world building I'm used to (Desden files) for magic it still presents a fully fleshed world that is interesting and the plot has you invested in the characters. To be honest while short at less than 7 hours and not my favorite book this one is worth the credit and I was so sad that the next books are not on audible yet. I am eagerly awaiting them being added.

Story is okay, if a bit formulaic

E. A. Copen topic is not all that distinct for other books exploring contemporary occult genre. The MC, Laz, is a relatively obscure necromancer who ekes-out a modest income as owner of a magic shop in New Orleans selling magic trinkets and providing an occasional seance when death quite literally finds itself at his doorstep. The story moves forward in an agreeable manner as Laz, with his arcane skills and the begrudging help of a magic-skeptical police detective, attempt to solve the mystery behind this and other murders that follow. There are some plot twists but the culprits was (intentionally?) fairly obvious early on with the difficulty being in finding the evidence against them.

Travis Baldree's performance was well-done.

Good read but....

This is a good read and worth the time BUT it's basically a less sophisticated Dresden Files. I would read the Dresden series first. This is a decent series that deserves a listen but if I had to pick one, no contest, Dresden Files are the real thing - better written, better character development, and original.

Decent Listen

Narration is pretty solid, Baldree gave the story a noir feel, not sure if that was intentional or not. The overall story was just OK, a few more or longer chapters with magic and world building would have went a long way. Main character was likable, but just needed more. This is an easy listen and I think could be a really good series.

Fun listen

Story plays like a movie script. Some twists and minor turns in the plot which was pleasant. Great dialogue and great storytelling from the narrator. I recommend it. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Death Rites

I really enjoyed listening to this book. I can't wait until the rest of the series is in audio book format. I thought the narrator did an excellent job. I received this audio book for free through Audiobook Boom for my unbiased review.

Deaths doorstep, or at least at laz's

Loved the narration, the different voices for each character is what I always love, and they were different to the point you think that two people are narrating.

Story, at first when you read about him finding the body, you think it would be cut and dry... then you read on and strip clubs, and cemeteries... death gods and there lackeys... gods of the land, cults, statues of winged penis's, fae....the list goes on and on. The story becomes it's own thing and draws you in.slowly but surely... This poor necro wizard can never catch a break... but in the end he will have to make a choice... one that would make him a target until his dying days... will he do it or deny and run... if this intrigues you then get this story... I doubt you will regret it.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audio book by the author, narrator, or publisher, and it's my honest opinion because I read reviews as well and wanna know if a book is worth my time...

Just the right Mix

This audio had just the right amount of humor, mystery and action. The narrator voice was smooth and clear. I had no problem in knowing who was who. He made the MC Lax someone who you really wanted to come out on top. This was a good pairing of words and voice.
This audio was given to me free, and I voluntarily gave this review.
