Publisher's summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From Ali Wong, star of the Netflix original series Beef, a “refreshing, hilarious, and honest account of making a career in a male-dominated field, dating, being a mom, growing up, and so much more” (Bustle) through heartfelt and wickedly funny letters to her daughters

Ali Wong is one of
Time’s 100 Most Influential People of the Year • “Knife-sharp . . . a genuine pleasure.”—The New York Times

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Time, Variety, Chicago Tribune, Glamour, New York

In her hit Netflix comedy special Baby Cobra, an eight-month pregnant Ali Wong resonated so strongly that she even became a popular Halloween costume. Wong told the world her remarkably unfiltered thoughts on marriage, sex, Asian culture, working women, and why you never see new mom comics on stage but you sure see plenty of new dads.

The sharp insights and humor are even more personal in this completely original collection. She shares the wisdom she’s learned from a life in comedy and reveals stories from her life off stage, including the brutal single life in New York (i.e. the inevitable confrontation with erectile dysfunction), reconnecting with her roots (and drinking snake blood) in Vietnam, tales of being a wild child growing up in San Francisco, and parenting war stories. Though addressed to her daughters, Ali Wong’s letters are absurdly funny, surprisingly moving, and enlightening (and gross) for all.

Critic reviews

“[Wong] spins a volume whose pages simultaneously shock and satisfy. . . . Dear Girls is not so much a real-talk handbook as it is a myth-puncturing manifesto.”—Vogue

“[A] refreshing, hilarious, and honest account of making a career in a male-dominated field, dating, being a mom, growing up, and so much more. . . . Yes, this book is addressed to Wong’s daughters, but every reader will find nuggets of wisdom and inspiration and, most important, something to laugh at.”Bustle

“Absurdly funny.”Parade

Hysterical

Definitely a mom book, I don’t think anyone that has not gone through this would get it. It is hilarious, I found myself laughing out loud (really loud) looking like a crazy person in public more than once listening to it.
Childbirth seems so funny after the fact but it is extremely hard and humoring about it it’s the perfect way for moms to spin this chapter into something to remember that brings joy rather than ptsd.
Ali does a great job performing it, and makes you feel like you are in a conversation listening to a friend.
Great find!

Funny, honest, and human

Ali Wong is hilarious. She's a phenomenal comedienne, and I enjoyed experiencing a different kind of funny from her (still dirty sometimes, but that's basically a trademark) in a book (audible) format. I love that she writes this to her girls, and imagine a lot of parents who would never want to share these kinds of stories with their kids even after they grow up - but that's what's beautiful about it. Parents are people and they are humans, and letting their children (granted they won't be reading this for some time) know it will make it easy for them to connect. I commend her for wanting to be known by her merit and not all the boxes she checks (female, minority/asian...etc) in her field. The hilarious picture she paints of her dynamic with her husband are sometimes gross, but that's kind of what makes it beautiful - marriage is where all is seen by the participants.

Easy listen - totally recommend if you already love Ali, or want to hear the story of a funny woman who pounded the pavement and is doing what she loves.

So relatable for Viet American

I loved this book. As a Vietnamese American womxn, it was refreshing to hear my own stories and culture reflected in her narrative. I finished this book in one weekend, couldn’t get enough of it.

Great story

I got to know Ali Wong thru the Netflix specials, and enjoyed her rawness and insightfulness. This book shares more behind the scene stories of her actual life and reveals more of a real person.
It’s interesting the book is written in the format of a letter to her kids kinda thing. I don’t know how they would take it, but I do appreciate a mom that cares to share. A healthy relationship sure needs open minded communication.

Always delivers

The epilogue made me tear up, and Ali Wong has me pissing myself with laughs - as expected. I have never felt so connected to a famous comedian - not Bc we have much in common - but Bc she is so...grounded and normal.
