Publisher's summary

In this charming and poignant novel that "oozes charm and wit and speaks beautifully about friendship and love, and the differences between the two" (Laura Pearson, author of I Wanted You to Know), teenager Emmie Blue releases a balloon with her email address and a big secret into the sky, only to fall head-over-heels for the boy who finds it. But 14 years later, everything Emmie has planned is up in the air.

At 16, Emmie Blue stood in the fields of her school and released a red balloon into the sky. Attached was her name, her email address...and a secret she desperately wanted to be free of. Weeks later, on a beach in France, Lucas Moreau discovered the balloon and immediately emailed the attached address, sparking an intense friendship between the two teens.

Now, 14 years later, Emmie is hiding the fact that she’s desperately in love with Lucas. She has pinned all her hopes on him and waits patiently for him to finally admit that she’s the one for him. So dedicated to her love for Lucas, Emmie has all but neglected her life outside of this relationship - she’s given up the search for her absentee father, no longer tries to build bridges with her distant mother, and lives as a lodger to an old lady she barely knows after being laid off. And when Lucas tells Emmie he has a big question to ask her, she’s convinced this is the moment he’ll reveal his feelings for her. But nothing in life ever quite goes as planned, does it?

Filled with heart and humor, Dear Emmie Blue "beautifully captures the heartache and frustrations of carrying our teenaged selves with us wherever we go" (Anstey Harris, author of Goodbye Paris) that is perfect for fans of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine and Evvie Drake Starts Over.

Warm wonderful story about hope love and friendship!

I truly enjoyed listening to this well-written and superbly narrated story about how Emmie finally finds the happiness she deserves. Other than for the friendship with Lucas, she had been living a stagnated life, almost paralyzed for all those years since the "incident". She's working a low-pay, dead-end job, rents a room in an elderly lady's house, and has only a couple of friends outside of her friendship with Lucas. She is at her happiest when interacting with Lucas, but, instead of relying on him, she needs to find her happiness within herself.

This is a lovely story, written in a charming and entertaining style. It has sadness, warmth, humor, romance, and is almost a perfect chick lit book.
The narration fits wonderfully with the story !

Mediocre

This book was okay, a little long for the content. It was predictable and a little cheesy but it was an easy listen. The narrator did a fantastic job.

Adored!

This book was perfection in every way. So far from a typical rom-com, had every bit of depth and humor and happiness every good book needs. I couldn’t put it down and felt sad when it was over!

Such a Wonderful Story!

This story of a young woman dealing with a past trauma and how a few minutes can impact the trajectory of your life. The author was so adept at drawing a realistic picture of how trauma is complex and ever present. And she creates beautiful story of how she, with the help of friends, regains her footing in life.

Soft Spoken and Whimsical

With the dilemma of My Best Friends Wedding, the heart of Me Before You and the whimsy of Love Rosie; Dear Emmie Blue is an astonishingly beautiful story of love. This love story is less about surface feelings and more about love that we find around us in the midst of hard things. Emmie is a lovely and quiet character recently reaching the pivotal age of thirty. As she faces this big momentous birthday she feels adrift and lost in not only who she is and what she wants out of life, but also in who she loves. Thinking she is in love with her best friend Lucas, she is heartbroken to learn that he is marrying not only an old ex, but someone who is kind, gentle and hard to betray. Yet as the story continues she does truly learn what love means. She learns about what makes a real family and that blood doesn’t necessarily mean acceptance. She learns that you can make a family amongst all the people you bring into your life. That the people that are there are the ones that will love you despite your flaws and mistakes. She learns that love, family, and happiness is found in the people who you can depend on. Even if you don’t know it or can’t see what is happening right in front of you. A soft spoken story that is light and filled with so much emotion. Very enjoyable read.

A sweet story

I enjoyed it. I remember my pen-pal and how enriching they were to ny life. I don't think people do that anymore, but it was nice to imagine it with a romantic twist.

So Touching, completely engulfing

I so enjoyed this story, it kept me wanting, unable to put it down. New surprises at every turn. Even the epilogue!
Only misgiving is the voice sounds more like a very young woman and the character is that of a 30 year old, slightly distracting.
