Publisher's Summary

Starting over has never been more dangerous...

Charlotte loves her new job at Rosie's bookshop in the small town of Kingfisher Falls. One day she will buy the store, but for now she's content to learn the ropes and forget her troubled past. Even the snobby book club ladies can't dampen her spirits.

But when a strange series of crimes casts suspicion on all the wrong people - including Charlotte - she can't stand back and watch. Charlotte begins her own investigation, and Rosie is more than happy to help.

With the community divided and criminals on the loose, the annual Christmas Eve street party is about to change lives forever, and Charlotte is the only one who can prevent a disaster.

So much for keeping her head down.

so many bullies!!!!

This was hard to listen to all the arrogant superficial people thinking they were better than others. Corruption and cowardly bullies abound
(male and female) and had me seeing red!!!! I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a good job.

The first step is admitting you have a problem, right?

You know how drug dealers sometimes offer your first hit for free? Well, I was treated to The Stationmaster’s Cottage for free and I’ve been an addict of Ms Clark’s linked series ever since.

This first Charlotte Dean mystery was consumed in a day which is a testament to the fact it kept me engaged and unable to step away.

Love the story and I suppose my only gripe is that the villains are SO overly villainous and Charlotte is more chicken than champion most of the time, but I really enjoyed this story and I’ve already purchased the next book in the series.

Le sigh. My name is Carolyn, and I’m a Clarkaholic.

Great Read!

I loved this story. As a member of a book group I loved the idea of living over a bookstore that you work in. I love Christmas too, so this was a wonderful introduction to Phillipa Nefri Clark’s series. The characters are all people I feel like I know now that I’ve heard this story. I can’t wait to learn more about the characters introduced in this book! From the grouches to the friendly people and everyone in between this story will have a character you can relate to! I’m hooked!

4/5 stars

Narrated by Carla Kissane

Run Time: 6 hrs and 39 minutes

Summary:

Dr. Charlotte Dean starts over in a new town, helping out Rosie with her bookshop. Of course, she runs straight across a mystery: somebody’s stealing the town’s Christmas trees.

Additional Comments:

· 4/5 stars plot: the small-town intrigue is low key and interesting.

· 4/5 stars descriptions: lovely, especially Charlie’s walks in the forest.

· 4/5 stars main character: Charlie’s a solid, real-feeling character, but there’s a lot of stuff in her past that is alluded to but doesn’t ever come to fruition. We never really learn why she’s starting over. This being book 1 in the series, you’d think some of that would be explained.

· 4/5 stars side characters: The book club ladies got tiresome real quick. Rosie’s a saint. Trevor’s a handsome saint Charlie admires from afar.

· Title fit: poor. Deadly Start implies somebody dies. Pretty sure the biggest crime was some people breaking in and making a mess to run away with Christmas trees.

· 3/5 stars closure: The mystery is explained but it doesn’t feel complete.

· 5/5 stars Christmas vibe: I happened to be listening to this around Christmas. It’s got all the gooey side trappings of the season.

· 4/5 stars performance: Decent. I usually listen to books at 2.3x speed, but had to back this one down to 2x to make heads or tails of the words in the Australian accent, but that’s fine.

Conclusion:

Christmas-y cozy mystery.
*I received a free copy of the audiobook. I've freely chosen to review it. All thoughts are my own.

Deadly Start

This was a very good read.Once you get the accent down and past the stereotypical Chief Constable always blaming the new gal in town,it is pretty good! Charlotte is living in a new town with a new town for reasons we don't know. When Christmas trees are stolen, she sees it happen and ends up with the blame. Carla Kissane was a decent narrator. She has a monotone delivery, but it isn't too annoying. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Cozy mystery

I love small town cozy mystery’s and this was no exception, although I think the title was misleading the story itself was fantastic with all the different characters one was still able to keep up with who’s who.
I received this free from the author or narrator for an honest review.

A Small Town Cozy Mystery!

This was my first Phillipa Nefri Clark's book, and won't be my last. This is the first book in the Charlotte Dean Mysteries Series. I liked this Small Town Cozy Mystery. The characters are well developed. The plot is well crafted and interesting. Carla Kissane did a good job with the narration. Looking forward to listening to Deadly Falls, the next book in the series.

Fun cozy!

I love finding new authors, so when Phillipa Nefri Clark popped onto my radar I was happy to give this a listen. Charlotte Dean has recently moved to Kingfisher Falls only to find herself immersed in a small town of bullies and danger! That's not saying that the town doesn't have it's good points. There are many who are friendly and look out for each other, but this one group of mean women has it out for a young family and will do what they have to, to just be mean. Not to mention the run on Christmas tree robberies! Who would steal a Christmas tree, and why? Add in the local constable being less than helpful, Charlotte finds herself sleuthing and witnessing things that could put her own life on the line. Will she find out the answers? Small town excitement, the possible budding romance, the wonderful book shop and a whole lot of wonderful people start this series out with a bang!

Carla Kissane is our story teller and she is fantastic! I love her accent, and she fits her characters with the perfect voices. From men to women, old to young, she finds the perfect sound for each and creates our world to fall into . I enjoyed her performance.

Small town mystery.

The story just didn't urge me to turn the pages, though it might perhaps be because I found the narration style a little difficult.
