City girl Poppy desperately wants to pay off her debts, quit her dead-end job, find her father...oh, and keep a plant alive. But she knows that these are just hopeless dreams - until the day a letter arrives. Suddenly, Poppy is on a train heading deep into the English countryside to claim a mysterious inheritance. And the last thing she expects to receive is a cottage garden nursery - complete with romantic climbing roses, scented herbs, a bossy, talkative ginger cat...and a dead body.

Now, she must solve the mystery or risk losing her new home and the chance for a fresh start. But who would want to murder a gardener in a sleepy little village? Could a reclusive inventor have something to do with the killing? What about the brooding crime author next door? And why is her long-lost cousin so desperate for her to sell the cottage?

Poppy might not know her pansies from her petunias, but that doesn't stop her digging for clues. The only problem is - she could be digging her own grave, too....

Poppy was a joy to get to know in the first of the series. I found her character endearing. This was such an enjoyable story. One part finding oneself, one part mystery and one part horticultur. It's a whodunit that completely enthralled me.

H.Y. Hanna has created another wonderful series with interesting and charming characters. I’m glad to see the one of the main characters, Orin, is a ginger tomcat very much like my own cat. I hope book 2 is soon to follow. Pearl Hewitt did an amazing job of narrating. Her interpretation of Orin’s voice was spot on and I could see him clearly in my mind. Let’s hear a round of the dynamic duo, H.Y. Hanna and Pearl Hewitt.

This first in the English Cottage Garden Mysteries is a charming tale of a young woman, who lost her mother to cancer and never knew her father. Working in the city, trying to make ends meet, (at a dead end job), where her boss talks down to her, but she feels trapped. Living with an older friend of her deceased mother’s who treats Poppy like her own, Poppy is dismayed to learn that she may soon have to move because the landlord has told them they are breaking the terms of their lease. When, out of the blue, she receives a letter, saying she’s inherited her grandmother’s country cottage and plant nursery . . . with just ONE hitch. She has to live there and keep the business going. Heading out on the train, to check things out, Poppy encounters a little more than she bargained for. And that’s where the fun . . . and murder . . . begins. I will definitely be continuing this series. Best of the best in cozy mysteries!

This was a fairly enjoyable light read. The performance was excellent. I didn't like Poppy, though. She's unwilling to stand up for herself unless the situation is desperate. She also makes weird choices, like buying a sandwich for lunch when she can't afford a coffee on the way to work. Why not pack a lunch if she's that desperate? Not sure I'll be reading the next book just because of the main character.

Not a Poppy fan

Deadhead and Buried is book 1 in the English Cottage Garden Mysteries series. This is a cozy mystery set in England. I really enjoyed this book. It is my first book by this author. It captured my attention from the very first scene. This is a great start to the series and I am looking forward to continuing on to book 2. The narration was really good. I don’t have anything negative to say. 5 stars overall.
