Publisher's summary

"Doctor," he said before he said anything else, "I am haunted. By ghosts." His parents are brutally murdered in a Manson-like intrusion and Calvin narrowly escapes the same fate. He spends time in an expensive private mental hospital, but when he returns home, he senses the presence of evil in the shadowy old mansion.

Someone seems to follow him along the halls, and whispers just beyond his hearing. Gradually the terror escalates. A hand shakes him awake at night, just as it did on that fatal night. Cringing in his bed, he hears his father being murdered all over again, and then his mother. But is the mansion haunted-or is it Calvin?

What a strange story

This was a really strange story. At the end I'm not sure I knew what was really happening. Was the house haunted or not? Was he just crazy???? I didn't care at all for the narrator as his speech pattern was way to slow for me. I'd had high hopes for this book, but was left disappointed.

Haunted

I loved how well this story was written and developed. The story deals with a man that believes he is haunted by ghosts but is he truly haunted by spirits. Calvin and his brother Bobby grew up in a very tumultuous family and only Bobby found relief from a tyrannical father by running away. Calvin who was younger had no choice but to stay and be tormented until the untimely death of his parents. Calvin's world was sent into a uncontrolled spiral and torment within himself so much that he stayed in a psychiatric hospital until his release. Listening to the story I can't discern rather he was haunted by actual ghost or the ghosts of a horrible childhood. I do recommend this book unless you are offended by books that deal with homosexuality and childhood trauma. I received this book from Audiobooks Unleashed and this is my honest unbiased review.

i enjoyed this book

the story itself was good but i did not like the ending. I felt so bad for poor Calvin living his life in despair & always worrying abour being crazy. I would .have lijed to know what happened to Calvin. but a thumbs up for anyone who enjoys a ghost8 story.

Real or imagined?

Haunted or crazy? Will we ever know? Tense.

Guy Veryzer did a good job narrating.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

A good creepy story!

Dead of Night
By: Victor J. Banis
Narrated by: Guy Veryzer
This is a book I received for free from Audioboom and the review is voluntary. This was a pretty good creepy story. It had lots of suspense and thrills in it. Had me guessing if the guy was nuts or if it really was haunted up to the very end. It had some slow parts and some sexual parts that could have been weeded out I thought and made the book flow smoother.
The narrator was good.

Not for me

Not sure if it was just the narrator or a combination but listening to this story was headache inducing. I love a good paranormal story and this should have been one, but it didn't make the cut.

WAY TO OVERDRAMATIC NARRATING

Okay, here you go.

The story was actually pretty good & has so much potential, (here is the but)

BUT...The narrator was way to over dramatic in his reading of the story!! He absolutely KILLED this story. And when I say killed I don't mean in a good way either.

Why on earth would he read the entire story as if he was Vincent Price reading The Hand? Actually, Vincent used his narration to make it dramatic for a reason & did great...so using him for the description was probably the wrong example. lol

Now, don't get me wrong....
The guy does have a good voice and has potential, if he just learned more & has more practice. I can say using the creepy voice at the creepy or scary parts within a story, then sure, absolutely it could work. However, he read the entire story as if he was doing the whole... "Slowly he turned, inch by inch, step by step..." Theatrical play thing. It took away from any creepy or scary parts, because the entire book was read that way.
By doing so there was nothing to build up you. If you get my meaning?

I'm sorry, but unless they get a better narrator or Guy improves and then reread the book....I can NOT in good faith recommend this book to others or Guy, the narrator.

I was given this book for free at my request and I am providing this review voluntarily, in hopes it can help fix issue with the narration or story or it can help someone to pick this book.
However, in this case save someone's money and not pick this narrator...at least for now. After all, ppl can get better over time & become very successful.

Above all, it comes down to your personal taste & just because I don't care for something does not mean you will not like it as well. One never knows until they try it.
