Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling Author Wendy Corsi Staub is the master of psychological suspense. Here, she delves into the twisted mind of The Angler, who lures his human prey the way he catches fish. Sometimes, he gets one worth keeping...for a little while....

No such thing as coincidence....

Staring into his frightened blue eyes, investigative genealogist Amelia Crenshaw Haines vows to help this silent little boy who is unable - or unwilling - to communicate his past. Though her own roots remain shrouded in mystery, she relies on tangible DNA evidence to help fellow foundlings uncover theirs...until a remarkable twist of fate presents a stranger bearing an eerily familiar childhood souvenir.

NYPD Missing Persons Detective Stockton Barnes has spent his career searching for other people’s lost loved ones and outrunning a youthful misstep. Now a chance encounter with a key player from that fateful night leads him on a desperate quest to locate the one woman he’s ever regretted leaving - unless a savage killer finds her first.

As Amelia and Barnes uncover intertwining truths - and lies - the real horror emerges not in crimes already committed, but in evil yet to come....

choppy

sad to say but this author left a lot unsaid. The story is choppy in parts, especially towards the end and leaves you trying to figure out why. I'm going to follow the series, but it could have been so so much better.

I'm having trouble with this one.

I normally like Wendy Corsi Staub. But this one is dragging. I feel like it keeps on going over and over the same things, repeating topics. There's a serial killer/child molester who keeps popping up but I'm halfway through the book and I still don't know how he fits in with the many other characters, and there are many. I can't attach to any of these people. It needs to improve and soon.

The narrator, tho, is excellent. If she wasn't, I probably wouldn't have gotten this far in the book.

I'll update this review when/if I finish the book.

Update: The book didn't get any better. It ended suddenly and I'm still lost on the plot of the book. Was it the serial killer, was it whatever happened in Cuba, was it figuring out who were the parents of various people in the book, was it the "lost" children? I never did identify with any of the characters. The woman you'd expect to be strong wasn't, the woman who was strong was annoyingly strident and bull-headed.

I finished the book out of determination, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I'm so lost

I love this author but this storyline was all over the place. At thr end I was completely lost as to what happened. I thought maybe I missed something and went back to the last two chapters. I still don't understand.

Poor writing, great performance.

The writing just isn't all that great. I had a hard time being involved. The actual narration was great.

Too busy

I am a huge Wendy Corsi Staub fan. so when I saw this was a series, I got excited. The first book was hard to follow, because there were so many characters. This, the second book in the series is just as confusing too many characters, too many storylines, too busy overall. This feels like at least three books and one it’s going in too many directions with too many things to keep up withand at times leaves the performer in a difficult spot for keeping the characters straight performance wise. A recurrent character, Stockton Barnes, sounds different from book one to this one. Unless he’s meant to sound like an older man and I totally missed that. Also, disturbing for me is the child abuse that is so rampant between book one, and book 2 that I didn’t anticipate, and this triggering and hard to listen to. Unfortunately, in my excitement, I purchased all three books at one time; if it hadn’t been for that, I would not listen to this book or the third. Very difficult to get through this series not impressed at all.
