Publisher's Summary

Keep the door locked.

Sam is excited to spend a week at her uncle's remote lake cabin. It's a chance for her to focus on her art without distractions: no neighbors, no phone, and a small radio as her only contact with the outside world.

But there's something deeply unnatural lingering in the lake.

The radio's news reports talk about disappearances on a nearby hiking trail. The car won't start. And Sam starts to believe she's being stalked when she catches glimpses of a tall, strange man standing at the end of her dock, staring intently into the swirling waters below.

Good book but not my cup of tea

I didn't finish the entire book. When I got to the part where I realized it was not a paranormal book, but a book about a serial killer, I stopped reading. From the description of the book, I thought it was going to be a paranormal book which it turned out to definitely not be. However, the parts of the book I listened to, were really good.

Watch out at the Lake

Sam is spending a week at her uncle’s lake cabin. She is wanting to be somewhere with no distractions, so she can meet a deadline. There is something strange going on, people are disappearing on a trail nearby the cabin, and Sam starts feeling like she is being stalked by a tall man. Is she losing her mind, is someone after her? Will she be able to escape? I found this book to be interesting, the reader also kept me intrigued with the suspense in her voice.

Predictible but Still Very Good

I am a true horror fan and over the last few years I have become disenchanted with the genre because not much can scare me these days. After finding Darcy Coates' books I was hoping she would all change all of that. After I finished listening to Craven Manor, my first Darcy Coates audiobook, I wanted more of the thrills and chills she had to offer, so I purchased Dead Lake immediately. I was hoping to be afraid a little but I don't believe this book was meant to be scary at all. The writing was very good and the characters were fully fleshed out and the plot, even though predictable it was very good. I was on the edge of my seat and found myself screaming at my player thinking I was helping our protagonist out a little bit, but all I wound up with was a sore throat.

Nicky Phillips did a great job at narrating and I would love to listen to more of her projects. Dead Lake didn't scare me at all. There weren't even any chills that I can remember BUT it was still a great book and I recommend it to everyone 16 and older.

Meh

This is not one of her best stories. I wasn’t fond of the narrator either. I’m in the minority it seems. However, I couldn’t give this book 3 stars because that is what I normally give a good book. If the book is great it gets 4 stars and rarely do I find books so exceptional that it merits 5 stars. I think this one would’ve been better read than listened to.

Creepy

What a fantastic and creepy read. Darcy has done it again. Dead Lake is an exciting, and mesmerizing great read, I would highly recommend. Keep those great stories coming Darcy. I can hardly wait for the next.

Chilling and Adrenaline Rushing

What did you love best about Dead Lake?

It chilled me. It scared me. It frightened me. There was a lot of suspense and thrills, that I found myself needing to pause the book to give my heart a chance to slow to a healthier pace. I was anxious, scared, and hopeful for Sam.

What did you like best about this story?

The story was so well told that I found myself easily visualizing the scenes and frightened as slowly realized she was truly in danger. I mean, come on. Ian did everything short of walking Sam to the shanty to make her understand just how much danger she was.

Which character – as performed by Nicky Phillips – was your favorite?

The drunk radio host, uncle something or another.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Scared. It gave me chills.

Good ghost story.

I like ghost stories that have meaning and not just random ghosts haunting for no reason. In Dead Lake the author goes back to let us know who and why the ghost are haunting. There are a few times where I got a slight bit confused with what was reality and what was a dream, but the story moved along well and the author made good use of time to keep the story interesting. Great narration with a clear, engaging voice and professional editing. I would definitely listen to another book by this author and narrator.

Predictable

Extremely disappointing ghost story. Very predictable, from the ‘ghost’ to the cheesy ending. Every element taken from either a film or another story. Avoid.
