Publisher's summary

AD 55. The Emperor Claudius is dead. Nero rules. His half-brother Britannicus has also laid claim to the throne. A bloody power struggle is underway.

All Prefect Cato and Centurion Macro want is a simple army life, fighting with their brave and loyal men. But Cato has caught the eye of rival factions determined to get him on their side. To survive, Cato must play a cunning game and enlist the help of the one man in the empire he can trust: Macro. As the rebel force grows, legionaries and Praetorian Guards are moved like chess pieces by powerful and shadowy figures. A political game has created the ultimate military challenge. Hail Simon Scarrow!

Of course book 16 in the Eagles of Empire series is great! Simon Scarrow continues his wonderful tales of Cato and Macro, and the narrator, Jonathan Keebler, does his consistently excellent narration to perfection.

As always, incredible!

Simon Scarrow is at my top of favorite writers alongside Bernard Cornwell. I get from one that the other doesn’t provide and visa versa. This book, like all of the others, has clever story lines and it makes you believe it with every detail. I particularly love the dynamics with the main characters, Cato and Macro. They balance one another out and continue to fight together whether it’s barbarians, politicians or even personal matters, it develops as one story. I like how Nero is portrayed and how it plays out. If you’re questioning if you should read or listen to this one, I urge you to give it a shot.

Simon Scarrow still amazing!

Cato and Macro adventures is one of my favorite historical fictions. Simon Scarrow allows you really visualize the actions taking place with very little words. I have read or listened to most historical fiction authors. In my opinion he surpasses even Bernard Cornwell with his ability to keep you inticed with the story and wanting more. The preform did a really good job also in using different word pronunciation to emphasize different character attributes.
