David Attenborough first appeared in front of a television camera in the 1950s when, together with London Zoo's Curator of Reptiles, Jack Lester, he persuaded the BBC to mount and film an animal-collecting expedition. The result was Zoo Quest. Specially recorded for audio, David Attenborough's early adventures are sometimes life-threatening, often hilarious and always totally absorbing. The warmth and enthusiasm that have made him a broadcasting legend are instantly apparent here as he recounts this magical journey.

Following his expedition to Indonesia, as told in Zoo Quest For A Dragon, David Attenborough's next animal collecting and filming trip was to New Guinea, home of the exotic Birds of Paradise. The quest demanded hazardous treks across treachorous terrain in the Jimi Valley and on the edges of uncharted territory but the arduous adventures were finally rewarded when, as the camera turned, a Count Raggi's Bird of Paradise enthralled him with its frenzied dance.

Story
"There is the mammal way and there is the bird way." But the bird way is much more than a unique pattern of brain wiring, and lately, scientists have taken a new look at bird behaviors they have, for years, dismissed as anomalies or mysteries - what they are finding is upending the traditional view of how birds conduct their lives, how they communicate, forage, court, breed, survive. They are also revealing the remarkable intelligence underlying these activities, abilities we once considered uniquely our own.

Story
When we see a bird flying from branch to branch happily chirping, it is easy to imagine they lead a simple life of freedom, flight, and feathers. What we don't see is the arduous, life-threatening challenges they face at every moment. Beaks, Bones and Bird Songs guides the listener through the myriad, and often almost miraculous, things that birds do every day to merely stay alive. Like the goldfinch, which manages extreme weather changes by doubling the density of its plumage in winter.

Story
David Mitchell’s 2014 best seller Thinking About It Only Makes It Worse must really have made people think - because everything’s got worse. We’ve gone from UKIP surge to Brexit shambles, from horsemeat in lasagne to Donald Trump in the White House, from Woolworths going under to all the other shops going under. It’s probably socially irresponsible even to try to cheer up.

Story
The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

His enthusiasm is as infectious as ever, and conveys a unique fascination on topics as diverse as the Sloth, Monstrous Flowers, the Platypus, Giant Birds, Dragons, the Fire Salamander, Faking Fossils, the Coelacanth, the Dodo, Bird's-nest Soup and the Large Blue Butterfly. So listen to these stories to find out the real reason why animals sing, the story behind a 150-million-year-old feather, and what it is about snakes that really unnerves Sir David.

Who doesn't love David Attenborough?
If your family is like my family, you've watched every David Attenborough film on Netflix so often you can practically recite them (except for the parts with the killer whales and the baby grey whale which we skip all the time, no one should watch that more than once.) You've watched David's joyous response to the blue whale and the lyerbirds mimic chainsaws.
These stories are a nice accompaniment to the films with some nice behind the scenes tidbits.

delightful!
David Attenborough's Life Stories are just wonderful! He starts his book stating he would like to be a sloth and continues throughout with educated, witty stories. The first time I attempted to listen I could not get through this book, it is not difficult but there are times when a picture would be nice. I had to get to the point in my listening skills where I can imagine what he is saying. At the end he discusses the hobby of collecting and how collecting has changed over the years. Electronic developments, (i.e. emails effect on stamp collecting), internet and books and enviormental controls and concerns have altered many traditional types of collecting. He mentions the advancements in photography and how the camera is the hope and advancement of todays collectors. I loved this short listen and plan to store it on my Kindle so I can listen over and over.

Attenborough's a hit once again...
Has David Attenborough ever done something to the dislike of... anyone? This collection of little stories and incidents in his life are beautifully narrated in that most recognisable of voices. Humour mingles in with his clear love for all things wild and one can't help but to smile at both. Hours of listening that you find yourself drifting off to, but rewinding, just to hear what he has to say.
