Great Story... terrible reader

I have read all of Robert Sidney Bowen's "Dave Dawson" books... multiple times. You have to first suspend your current sensibilities and recall that these were written both during and right after WWII.

That said, the stories are well written and were aimed at a young audience. They are full of action and the lighthearted relationship between the two main characters.

Knowing these stories so well (having grown up with them), I was looking forward to hearing this one read to me. The story is all there, but the narration is, frankly, terrible.

First, there is some sort of soundtrack that haunts the background of the narration. It is totally unnecessary and distracts from the reading. Unfortunately, the soundtrack may have been added to make up for the terrible narration. The reader sounds more like a poorly programmed AI than a human with a feel for the material. He apparently cannot read punctuation. His delivery is stilted and robotic. There is no feel for the words on the page and the whole thing falls flat. For a war story with desperate action and undying friendship, the reading is just about as flat and emotionless as it can be.

I would like to see all of Bowen's books as Audible offerings, but please suggest that this reader find a different profession.

constant background music sucks

constant background music is super annoying and almost drowns out the guy reading. music sucks and was a stupid idea. a few seconds of better quality music starting a new chapter or ending a chapter would be ok.
