Geary believed in the Alliance. Even when he uncovered overwhelming evidence that the highest echelons of the government and fleet command were involved in secret programs and prison camps, he believed it was worth saving. He believed his duty was to see that justice was served even though some factions feared that revealing the truth would cause the Alliance to crumble. But after narrowly surviving two assassination attempts when he brings evidence of the misdeeds to the capital star system, Geary realizes that some want to get rid of him.

The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Publisher's Summary
The legacy of Mari and Alain blazes ahead in this brand-new sequel to the hit Audible original series The Pillars of Reality.
The world of Dematr had been locked unchanging for centuries by the Great Guilds, most people living in a world of oil lamps, crossbows, and horse cavalry, the Mechanics reserving to themselves the technology for steam locomotives, rifles, and far-talkers while the Mages treated all others as if they were nothing - until Master Mechanic Mari, dragon slayer and pirate queen, and Master of Mages Alain raised the army of the new day to free their world.
Kira of Pacta Servanda, the daughter of the two greatest heroes of her world, was six years old the day she stood on a battlement in Dorcastle, staring up at a statue of her mother while surrounded by bodyguards who fenced Kira off from the nearby crowds. As the morning sun cast the shadow of Mari's statue over Kira, she realized that she would spend the rest of her life in that shade. Then the world of Dematr learned that a new kind of ship had left the far-distant world of Urth. The ship would take only 10 years to cover the immense distances between stars. Of all the colony worlds, the ship was coming to Dematr. But for what purpose? Kira was 16 when the ship from Urth arrived, and she discovered that her world still needed heroes.

Good, but...
I hadn't read any of the other books preceding this one, so had no frame of reference. Very interesting story and world. Overall I like it, and I actually liked the teen-aged angst because it's a great reminder of what my kids are feeling when they act like jerks. :) But Audible...why do you have a man narrating the story of a strong female lead? The performance is good, certainly, but surely you could have found a great female narrator?

Great Start to Sequel Series
Listening Speed 1.8x
A sequel series done right, there is an emphasis on new characters and some references to old characters. This series sets up the plot for the interaction with Earth, and looking at why the Great Guilds formed in the first place. From a character point of view its about living under someones shadow and being constantly compared to someone. In the end this story is about making your own path. The book is self-contained there is no real cliff-hangers,
MacLeod Andrews performance is excellent. Characters have distinctive voices (i.e differentiable), the pacing and speed of the story was well done. Production was excellent I did not notice any audio anomalies while listening.
Overall Jack Campbell has done an excellent job of starting the sequel series to Pillars of Reality with a great balance between old and new characters. Characters felt realistic in the decisions they made (even if they might not be the best). It also gives an interesting perspective on a possible future society from Earth. The story has a lot of action including jumping off of trains, sailing the high seas, encounters in alleys, lots of running away. Also, there is an awesome underdog scene in which I pumped my fist in the air with some great justice.

I LOVE THIS STORY!!! I NEED MORE STARS!!!
This is the BEST BOOK I have yet consumed from John Hemry's nom de plume Jack Campbell! The emotional depth of the characters kept this father of a teenage girl and boy laughing and on the verge of a tear! The narration skills of MacLeod Andrew's is a HUGE AWESOME portion of this exquisite listing pleasure. My wife, teen son and daughter have been equally impacted by this Delectable Audible presentation of Daughter of Dragons.
If you are new to this world start with The Dragons of Dorcastle, before you meet Lady Kira you must know and love Lady Marie and her Mage Alane, the good news is you have Six Supremely written and narrated books ahead of you; before you reach this AMAZING introduction to their daughter! Enjoy the journey you will laugh, cry, fear greatly for these characters and ultimately at the well ending cliffhangers you will gradually begin to cheer as you anxiously look at the calendar for the next six to nine months, it has taken John to work mage-filled miracles and MacLeod to record audio ambrosia.
I am looking forward to the end of the year; (and it isn't because of Star Wars Episode VIII, It is rather the next volume of the Legacy of Dragons! (Coincidentally, it too could be called Episode VIII).

I loved all the pillars of reality books and this book is no different, it's well written and action packed and the main characters are the daughter of the daughter, (a brilliant mix of her parents) finding herself and her hidden inner abilities ,and a teenage urth boy ,who finds himself with the aid of a worthy quest to save billions of lives and the adventure of his life with the most amazing girl he has ever met .
I'm not going to give any of the plot away, I will simply say, yes it must be read or listened to, loose yourself in the world of Demater, you won't regret it ......enjoy!

Another brilliant book with a new generation of characters and the best of the originals. If you liked the first 3 books you will
If you liked the first 3 books, you won't be disappointed with this one. Maree and her Mage show their cunning ability to overcome adversity whilst a new pair of heroes turn up to carry on the action. Read the first series first for the most enjoyable experience. Give me the next book asap.
