Publisher's summary

Devon Sanders, a private investigator known for his efficiency and discretion, has no interest in getting involved with the paranormal community. Unfortunately for him, the paranormal community does have an interest in him, or at least in his secret. Devon is exceptional in solving cases using his uncanny intuition.

When Devon uncovers a violent murder, he knows it is not a natural crime. In order to solve this case and expose the murderer, he will have to go undercover as a wizard in the paranormal university, Quintessence. He soon discovers that his talent has more to do with supernatural forces than he ever knew.

Magic is elemental.

Okay, but not for me

I agree with the reviewer that said this book is like an adult version of Harry Potter. The only difference is that characters and plot in Harry Potter was more developed. There is so much going on and so many characters that it is easy to get lost. The narrator doesn't help. His voice is full of doom and gloom and adds extra drama when it isn't necessary. All in all the book is decent. I'm not sure if I will will continue the series.

Good world building

Would you try another book from Rain Oxford and/or Todd Menesses?

Yes

What other book might you compare Dark Waters to and why?

Harry Dresden - wizard and privat investigator.

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed the gradual introduction to this magical world, where we explore the supernatutal with Devon Sanders. There are some stereotypes, and unfortunately some plot predictability. I really enjoyed the buch private investigator having to come to termes with his feelings to practice magic, but hated his intuition that just saved him from this and that. I will keep an eye out for the next book in the series, but must likely buy it on sale.

Narrator is too ridiculous

Every action is so dramatic according to the reader. I was cracking up and shaking my head for the ridiculousness. It distracts from the otherwise very interesting story.
Great book about magic, vampires, fey, shapeshifters and the school for them. The lead is a likable mature 30 yr old with a haunted past. I think more than necessary people died but i guess this isn't harry potter. Overall good book, i just hope the reader chills a lot.

great story - narration very distracting

i liked the story, but the narration was very annoying. kind of like someone introducing a blockbuster epic movie throughout the book. The fake voice was terrible and very distracting. The australian voice was not consistent and the accent was quite terrible too. I would sign up for book 2 only if the narration was changed.

Although it was Harry Potterish....

Author did a good job of creating a unique universe and culture. I enjoyed it. The narrator would have been better fit for a film noire detective story.

good story

Narrator drives me crazy. Really wish it had somebody else. Why the heck do they require 15 words?

Harry Potter for Adults

The book was pretty good. I wish the story was expanded a little more to show more information about the main character's past, but overall is was engaging and fun to listen to.

Just okay for me

The narrator was a little much for me, too dramatic too often, I liked him in his voices of the minor characters more than the main character. The story was good but seemed more like a combinations of other stories than something original.

Enjoyed the story. Needs a better narrator!

As these fantasy series go, this seems like a pretty interesting start. I ended up liking the main character and his plight is remarkable. However, the narrator really turned me off. He sounds like he's at least 60 and the character in the novel is supposed to be 30! I kept picturing an older guy but the circumstances don't fit with that. PLEASE use a younger sounding guy to narrate!!

Monster Truck Narration

This story was entertaining. It was fun, especially if you are into this genre. However, it was a bit predictable and cliche in many places. But it you are just looking for something light and fun this will do. What made me give it such a low score, though, was the terrible narration! It was so intrusive that it disrupted the feeling of being in the story. The guy sounds like the Monster Truck Rally advertisers. You know the ones that say, "SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY!! COME TO THE MONSTER TRUCK RALLY WHERE YOU MIGHT PAY FOR THE WHOLE SEAT BUT YOU WILL ONLY USE THE EDGE!" He sounded like there was something dramatic in every single sentence. It was quite ridiculous and irritating. I think a different narrator could have saved this audio book.
