Publisher's summary

When another Halloween brings an additional death, a young police officer on the Isle of Man suspects they are connected to dark secrets in her own past.

When Claire Cooper was eight years old, her mother mysteriously vanished during Hop-tu-naa, Halloween on the Isle of Man. At 14, Claire is still struggling to come to terms with her disappearance when she's befriended by a group of five teenagers who mark every Halloween by performing dares. But Claire's arrival begins to alter the group's dynamic until one year a prank goes terribly wrong, changing all their futures and tearing the friends apart.

Six years later, one of the friends is killed on Halloween in an apparent accident. But Claire, now a police officer, has her doubts. Is a single footprint found near the body a deliberate taunt? As another Halloween dawns, bringing with it another death and another footprint, Claire becomes convinced that somebody is seeking vengeance. But who? And which of the friends might be next? If she is going to stop a killer and unlock the dark secrets of her past, Claire must confront her deepest fears - before it's too late.

Chris Ewan, author of the standalone thrillers Safe House and Dead Line, returns to the Isle of Man with a thriller that will keep you up all night.

I really hoped this would be good...

I bought this book because I had read Chris Ewan's other book Safe House which I enjoyed.
The Isle of man is a fascinating setting and the descriptions are beautiful. I really appreciate this author's ability to describe the setting so eloquently. However, that was not enough to save this book.
This book has a promising premise. For the first half I was really enjoying the buildup and the detailed explanation of the events that were leading to the climax of the book. Unfortunately, the last four hours of the book were extraordinarily tedious and I feel like the plot completely fell apart. The motivations of the characters felt juvenile and ridiculous.
I love mysteries and I wish the author had pulled this one together a little better. This is not a terrible book and there were parts I enjoyed, but overall it was a disappointment.

Well done

This stands a bit apart from this author's others in an interesting and delightful way. I found it to be quite good, and I loved the ending. I've listened to all he's written and Mr. Ewen is among my top 10 favorite authors
