Publisher's summary

Some heroes and villains are not born. They ascend.

They are the cursed, the disowned, and the outcasts of the human and Shattered worlds. The boogeymen in the dark. They are seers.

After his family was slaughtered by two monsters made from the darkest of nightmares, Logan Blake became a seer, a human who was affected by a strong magical presence early in life. He now works as a contractor, a mercenary working in the Shattered Community.

Now with his only ally, a forbidden elf-mage hybrid named Samantha, he is offered a contract that threatens the future of the Shattered World. With enemies hiding in the shadows, will his skills and abilities thrust him into his destiny, or will echoes of the past be his downfall? Find out in Dark Redemption: A Shattered World Novel.

love this title

I've been a fan of this author's work for some time and am excited that he's branching out to audible as well, this book is a great story with good attention to detail, about a kid who finds out he's a seer through a series of events and how to use his powers and thankfully drifts away from the "my village burned down now I'm a kid with god powers" trope and instead goes into detail with a decent backstory, a grim-ish urban assassin spy bouncing between the fae world and the mortal world taking independent jobs and contracts and surviving in a post apocalyptic world making for a good read. I heavily recommend it and am looking forward to the sequel getting released as well.

Lots of action

This story has an original world and set of characters. Although there are werewolves they seem fairly low on the food chain! There is a new classification of magic user (seer) which adds interest to the world created. World building is pretty solid, characters are fleshed out nicely and there is a clear story arc which leads into the next book. There are also a lot of fight scenes!

The narrator wasn't the best though, with his range of voices sounding almost like something kids would produce in a school play.

awesome story

This was an awesome story filled with action and character building. The chapters flip back and forth between the present time and Logan's past in a meaningful way that explains how Logan came to be the person he is in the present. This is a fantasy book and there is no romance involved as the book blurb alludes. in the audiobook, the narrator did a good job except that he pronounced the S in Illinois about 75% of the time.

Great Writing

This book is action packed with very little downtime. I liked the way the author threw in chapters of the MC's past every so often. It helped you look ahead. The conclusion closed the story and left you wanting more. I did have a hard time getting adjusted to the narrator's voice.

Looking forward to the next installment.

This looks like the first story set in the Shattered Worlds and followed a pair of “Contractors” tasked with a “delivery” to give of a travelogue of sorts through the Shattered Words … which appear to be parallel dimensions where the shattered beings (magic folk) live. There are six (6) types of shattered: Fae, Shifters, Mages, Vampires, god[ling]s and Demons and I found each very interesting. So too was the idea that the veil responsible for keeping humans (norms) and shattered apart was created by none other than Merlin. World-building +1 *

The story itself alternated between flashbacks to fill in the backstory of the two (2) protagonists: Logan (seer/changeling) and Sam (outlaw/hybrid fae) working as contractors (seems like a cross between messenger and fixer). Seers are basically human hybrids (human/shattered) who seem to have slipped through the cracks of Merlin’s treaty limits, so they are frequently indentured (aka enslaved) to one shattered faction or another. Logan is currently free, after escaping from the “Institute” that created him … adding another group to his revenge “list.” Seers ascend through the power of a shattered and “spiritually” bound with a shattered soul? spirit? something. Under extreme conditions (threat of death), Seers will manifest additional abilities … making them monsters of a sort (reminded me of the heroes tv show). Except Logan is no typical seer ...

Ok … the downside: the narration was a little too forced and came across unnatural (just a touch better than having Alexa read it). The prose/storyline itself was a bit mechanical, but not bad for what appears to be a debut effort. On the plus side, the author did not make any of the mistakes that I often find in first efforts either … so props for that.

I was given this free advance review/listener copy (ARC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

A new perspective

Loved it! First one for me of this author and the narrator. I really liked the back and forth of past and present to give the reader a reasoning for what is going on. Loved the characters and their abilities. Narrator, Arthur Bray, does a fantastic job with the characters and telling the story. I'll be looking for book 2, for sure

Entertaining

I liked this story for the action and character development. I could have done without the multiple trips back in time for a character’s history; would rather start early and leap forward in time (personal preference). The narrator did a good job with making the story come alive. I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Out of Balance but good

I'll be clear, the story is great. There is a ton of action, and the tale has a breakneck speed that can give you whiplash if you aren't careful. The only downside is that the narration seems to come from somebody speaking into a can or competing with a low-key white noise machine; there is just something off about the sound. The narrator, Bray, also speaks in a rapid-fire, almost missing punctuation style, manner. Most likely a solid read, but some narration issues.
