Society crumbles after an EMP attack, and the terrifying nightmare has only just begun....

Three people from different walks of life each experience the end of America. Cassy is a 33-year-old prepper and single mother, away on business. Ethan is a hacker and conspiracy nut living underground. Frank is a family man out camping with friends and family. When a devastating EMP attack in the middle of the night destroys America's infrastructure, they are propelled on an unforgettable journey across an ocean of chaos to reach safety...Safety from an unknown invader and from once-fellow Americans now hungry and desperate. Dark New World is a prepper story of survival and the fight to retain humanity in the face of an apocalyptic event.

Better Than Expected

Got this as just something in between - waiting for my pre-order to come in. Pleasantly surprised. Story is about several characters, main one is a mother trying to get to her mother's house to save her children after an EMP. She winds up meeting several groups along the way and invites one group to join her (which they do at a much later point.) She is a semi prepper although not a trained soldier or what I would call a true survivalist at this point but she learns quickly.
Fast moving story with more behind the scenes action like a full out attack of (unknown origin soldiers) against the US. Story is told from several view points which is refreshing. Although a lot happens in a short time, the story moves on tying all the pieces together. I believe this is going to be a great series.
I usually try to buy books that are at least 8 hours long for my travels and this would be a short criticism. I always feel my credits should be saved for the longer books but at some point I will get the next one in this series.

Excellent

Dark New World goes beyond the typical EMP story. It addresses the cause of the EMP and the added challenges faced by the characters. It is written in a very realistic manner--which makes it even more intense than typical books in the genre. I have already purchased the next two in the series. I have an urge to stock up on MRE's and canned food after finishing this.

Don't waste your time!

I am an avid reader of this genre so I decided to give this a try despite its short length. The characters are shallow and it didn't take long to realize that I didn't care whether they lived or died. Don't waste your time or money(credit) on this one.

A fresh breath of air...

Everything from the plot and characters down to the narrator are 5 stars. The premiss is similar yet very different than anything out there at the moment.
For the first 6 chapters I found myself waiting for that cringe you get when you meet the first zombies and thank God there are none. Instead you find yourself rooting for the good guys as they battle against enemies of their own kind, foreign invaders and a scorched earth battle plan.
You have unlikely enemies and allies coming together to fight against what to most would be insurmountable odds that would make the best of us curl up and check out.
Even better is the amount of useful information not found in the hundreds of other books like this... From the 5 C's down to inspiring the reader to look up EMT classes at your local community college.
I will admit I passed on this book a few times based solely on the length of the book because I am drawn to longer stories first but TAKE MY ADVICE and buy it... I now have another book to add to my list of checking back daily to see if the next one is out yet! So hurry up already :0)

Loved it!

As always, Kevin Pierce is an excellent narrator! I always enjoy his work! He's an excellent story teller and does a great job with character voices! I love a good post apocalyptic or post disaster story. Looking forward to book 2!

After an EMP, it really is a Dark New World

An EMP has gone off and now power is out everywhere around them. Follow numerous people as they try to survive in this ever changing dark new world.

The narration was done by Kevin Pierce. This is the second prepper series that I’ve listened to that Pierce has narrated and I will reiterate that he has the perfect “prepper” type voice. Granted one of the main characters in Dark New World is a female, his voice still captures the prepper mentality really well and adds a lot to this novel.

There were definitely some scenes in this story that were incredibly realistic, I just feel that the timelines were a little shorter than one would expect. But, I’m an optimist. In Dark New World, things seem to fall apart much faster than I would expect. (Things started to go south within a day, I would probably expect 2-3 days before the “real” humanity would come out to play).

Not much is said about the enemy that these people are running away from and being engaged by, and I think that it’s left that way so that the reader can imagine any number of enemies that they want to. The EMP attack that starts this book off was really well explained and I think that some of the peoples reactions to it were also really spot on.

Part prepper and past post-apocalyptic (they kind of go hand-in-hand), Dark New World was an interesting read full of strong characters and what would happen to good and trusting people once society beings breaking down.

I was given a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

My phone stopped working!! Does yours work?

Would you listen to Dark New World, Book 1 again? Why?

I don't generally listen twice. Not enough time remaining on the planet to duplicate efforts.

If you’ve listened to books by JJ Holden and Henry Gene Foster before, how does this one compare?

This was my first one, but likely won't be the last.

What does Kevin Pierce bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Personalization of the characters, keeping them consistent, credible and interesting.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Prepper and EMP impact research was the result , as much as anything.

Any additional comments?

Fascinating beginning to what promises to be an epic saga. For EMP prepper story lovers, this is a good one. Recommended to those types of fans.

Enjoyable Post Apocalyptic read.

For me, the best thing about this book was the fact that it could happen!... An EMP is set off grinding life as we know it to a halt. But it doesn't just stop at an EMP, whoever set off the attack, keeps attacking! The author portrays what happened and life after the event through the eyes of 3 separate people, Cassy, Ethan and Frank. It was just so chillingly realistic that it's hard not to think, "what if".

Anyway, the plot for such a short book was fast paced and interesting. It pulls you in from the start and doesn't let you go. But the shortness is also it's downfall, because the plot also felt very rushed. I mean, things start going bad within a few hours of the attack! I would think that maybe a few days would pass before things start going truly bad.

The characters were all well written and developed, which, again, for a short book is a bonus! I liked all three and loved how their stories intertwine.

In all, this my be a short enough read, but it's an engrossing one and I really can't wait to listen to the next in the series!!

Kevin Pierce! What can I say about him that I haven't said before. He truly has a voice for this type of book. It's clear, concise, and easily pulls you in. He never fails but to capture my attention and makes the books come alive and that much more enjoyable.

*I received a copy of this for review. This in no way affected my thoughts.*

A great woman heroine

EMP is the new zombie - it seems another EMP book comes out every day, and most of them are almost the same, special forces guy ready for action blah blah blah. Now comes out a book and the main character is a single mom on a business trip, lights go out, need to get home. The story is well written and there is some character development that brings you into the very normal life of these people - I liked this book and look forward to the next in the series, this is not Hemingway but good entertainment with a solid message of forewarning -- Recommended.
