Publisher's summary

From the bestselling chroniclers of the American West comes the second gun-blazing adventure that could only happen in Texas.

Meet Cullen McCabe, a Lone Star sheriff who learned—the hard way—that there are two sure things in life . . .

The great state of Texas is a land of opportunity. For outlaws. And that he’s the man to protect the good people of Texas at any cost—and put the blast on anyone who gets in his way. . .

YOU ARE NOW ENTERING TEXAS. SAY YOUR PRAYERS.

There are a million ways to die in the great state of Texas. And on the lawless streets of New Hope, the odds are even worse. Once the home of Comanche, the region has been up for grabs since the settlers drove off the natives. Now it’s a magnet for settlers looking for cheap land, merchants looking to exploit its resources—and outlaws looking for a place to hide in between robbing and killing.

With shootouts and showdowns being a nightly occurrence, it’s one of the deadliest places on earth. And the governor ain’t happy about it. He wants to clean up the town. He wants to wipe away the scum. And he knows just the man to do it…

Enter Cullen McCabe. A small-town sheriff turned special agent, McCabe doesn’t care what he has to do—or who he has to kill—to rid this hellhole of every rustler, robber, and ruthless cuss in sight. Especially the notorious Viper Gang…

Dark is the Night is Another Great Western by the Johnstones

This is a typical western story about a good guy who saves a town and some good folks too. The details are vivid and fun to experience. There’s quite a bit of shoot ‘em up, and some tragedy but those details are not explicit or gory, making this a perfect read for teens and older. The Johnstone’s are good about making sure we hate the villains before they get shot.
The story lines between this book and the first book in this series are somewhat similar, but that doesn’t mean this book is predictable. Well…even if it is, it’s predictable in a good way. There’s no deep meanings or heavy thought provoking details about human existence, it’s just plain ol’, good ‘ol fun!
The narration is great, Little uses different voices for each character with real Western drawls. His reading pace is just right, not too fast or slow.
This isn’t my favorite series of the Johnstone’s, as I don’t have a crush on Cullen like I do Frank Morgan and I prefer books that detail the lives of women and romance a bit more. But still I’m happy to pay to hear/read this tale because it’s worth it.
