Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The devastating and thought-provoking tale about female anger, subservience and, ultimately, strength, inspired by a true story.

London, 1841.

Two hundred Englishwomen file aboard the Rajah, the ship that will take them on a three-month voyage to the other side of the world.

They're daughters, sisters, mothers - and convicts. Transported for petty crimes.

Except one of their number is a secret killer, fleeing justice.

When a woman is mortally wounded, the hunt is on for the culprit. But who would attack one of their own, and why?

Based on a true story, Dangerous Women is a sweeping tale of confinement, loss, love and, above all, hope in the unlikeliest of places.

Brilliant use of historical truths

I’ve had this in my wish list for a while now because I thought it was going to be a bit literary fiction heavy. It is literary fiction and beautifully written but also introduces such engaging characters that I was absorbed from the start. Hope Adams has taken real historical facts and woven a brilliant mystery around them but in a way that’s not exploitative of the original women. I look forward to seeing what else she has done.

loved it

I haven't been able to really "get into" a book in months which just isn't like me but I loved this. Great story with a good twist, Although Berties ending was a bit jarring/silly and unnecessary but would really recommend.

Disappointed

Enjoyed to start but with 4 hours left I won't be finishing it. I like fiction based on true facts and the story is interesting but lacks authenticity. I imagine life on a convict ship would be much tougher than is portrayed in this book. It just seems all a bit too genteel and so rather unbelievable.

Absorbing

Absorbing story based on real events. Fenella Woolgar is a skilled narrator. She captures the many and varied voices and accents with ease. Unsure about audio books at first. Realised that a brilliant narrator can bring a book to life and add to the experience.

The weaving of fact and fiction makes for an intriguing story

An interesting, historical fiction weaved into a whodunnit. Told from the prospective of only the women from the ship on their voyage to Van Diemen’s Land. Imagery is so clear you feel as if you can see what the characters see.
Narrator does an amazing job of all the different accents…book is worth a listen to for those alone, but the story is great as well

Bottom line: Find a different book to read

This book started out as a promising mystery, but ended as a poor romance with a predictably banal plot line. Honestly it was even cringe-worthy at times, and felt almost like the author got bored of writing halfway through and wanted to finish it asap.
