Publisher's Summary

The first book in Amanda Scott’s acclaimed Dangerous series journeys from the battlefields of Waterloo to the ballrooms and boudoirs of London, where a deadly deception unfolds....

Engaged by proxy to a man she’s never met, Lady Daintry Tarrant is dismayed when the war hero returns, introducing himself as her fiancé, Lord Penthorpe. She cherishes her independence and has turned away many suitors, but this one she must marry. Penthorpe is completely captivated by Lady Daintry - but he’s not who he claims to be.

Penthorpe and Lord Gideon Deverill fought together at the battle of Waterloo, and when Penthorpe fell, Gideon assumed his identity in order to see the beautiful Lady Daintry. Gideon knows there’s bad blood between Lady Daintry’s family and his own, but he’s smitten with Daintry and determined to reunite the bitterly feuding clans. When a ghost from Gideon’s past appears, he could lose everything - including Daintry’s love.

Heroine is too Shrewish

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Less emphasis on women's rights or at least giving them female characters a little feeling. Instead, they are mad at every man they meet - before the guy even opens his mouth.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The beginning where the hero takes the place of his dead friend when he returns to England from the Battle of Waterloo was the most interesting. The least interesting to me was the mystery of the feud going on between the two families.

Did Cat Gould do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes, but could have been a bit better. Bet she was as board as I was reading some of the drivel that came out of the female voices.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Dangerous Illusions?

I would have gotten rid of the silly mystery all together and toned down the heroine's ferocity.

Any additional comments?

After all this, I'm tempted to listen to Book 2 of this series as chapter 1 was tacked onto the end of this book and sounded interesting. Hopefully, the author was just trying to find her way with book 1 and book 2 will be better. Though Cat Gould's narration is different, I enjoy her portrayals if the book is half-way good.

Loved it

Great first book to this series. My only complaint is that it ended to abruptly without tying up the loose ends to the stories. The narrator could have been better, she made all the men sound like villains.

Interesting story

This well-narrated story had an interesting plot line driven by the antics of diverse characters most of whom I found to be overbearingly opinionated, selfishly self-absorbed, or cruel and misogynistic. Thankfully there were some good or well intentioned characters in the mix.

This is yet another HR that really pushes the reader/listener to confront the ugly reality of women’s rights of the time, or rather the lack thereof. Where, women transition from the responsibility and ‘protection’ of their parent/s to that of their husband, with their happiness depending greatly upon the love and values within the home and whether they’re luckily enough to find a love match (or at least a decent human being) once introduced to society.

There are no examples of happy marriages in this book but there is the potential of one for Daintry- if only she can overcome her doubts of Gideon’s intentions which have been shaped by her exposure to her family member’s marriages, the influence of her great aunt and an old rift that runs decades deep.

Truthfully, I found Daintry frustrating at times, but when I put her situation into context, I very much see where she’s coming from. Her family were toxic and despite this she was a wonderful influence on her young nieces in an environment that seemed to lack much joy. In hindsight she composed herself amazingly. I would’ve thrown my toys of the cot if it were me! Thank goodness this story had a few good men!

That said, I am pleased with the ending and am eager to listen to the next book in the series. I recommend.

Enjoyable

I liked this series of books even when I listened out of order accidentally. Good themes and characters.
