My Prison without Bars is a courageous and harrowing journey through the catacombs of hell, from the mind and voice of a little girl, living with her own monster underneath her bed. Written in first person, this novel is not a memoir, but more a psychological thriller based on true events; chronicling one woman's attempt to claw her way out of the darkness of Child Sexual Abuse, while struggling to find normal, in a not-so-normal world. It is poignant, dark and graphic; not for the faint of heart.

From the outside, there was no reason to suspect the family life of young schoolchild Keri was anything but unremarkable. Two loving parents, a backdrop of 1960s Britain; life had provided for her, at least with the riches of modesty. Keri herself however, would often confound teachers with her erratic behaviour, which was at best sullen and withdrawn; at worst violently disruptive. When challenged, she would only exacerbate her growing reputation as a fantasist; weaving terrible tales about the "abuse" she was suffering at the hands of her very creators.

Hard read/listen
This was a good book don't get me wrong. However it took me a while to read because it made me sick and depressed every time I listened to it. The things this poor girl went through is just horrible. Unfortunately this is not an uncommon story. Thousands of young girls and boys are trafficked every day. Not just in other countries but the US as well. Natalie thank you for sharing your story.

Great narration. Horrific book.
Once past the first few chapters, it became difficult to listen to more than a chapter or 2 at a time. What the girl endured, was so hard to listen too. Every convicted pedophile should be forced to listen to these child abuse stories to realize the damage they are doing. The children forced to work in brothels, clearly have hellish lives, more so than I ever would have imagined. I think of the documentaries I have seen, those where American men travel to Cambodia to have sex with children. They should all be castrated with no trial and no rights. What kind of God would allow this?

haunting but beautifully told
I was a little bored in the beginning but I came to find the overactive and still childlike telling of the story to be the most compelling part as we dive deeper into territory no child should ever even have to imagine... the narrator was a great pick! the voice sounds like it could be the one of story teller,.

Remember this is fiction
The story is gripping and horrifying. The young girl narration makes the situation come alive.
Avoiding spoilers there are several events in the book that are physically impossible. Suspend disbelief and see the horror of trafficking.
I will never reread the story, nor will I likely forget it.
This is a book that most adults should read, once.

Listed at true crime but is actually fiction
What disappointed you about Dance for Me?
I purchased it thinking it was a true story as I like to read how people overcome adversity but it turned out to be fiction.
What should have been a compelling subject was glossed over. You got a bit of a sense of the horror of what was happening but more from knowing what you've learned in life than what came out of the story. It didn't help that the narrator sounded so bored and read the whole book in a monotone. It sounded like someone spaced out on drugs when it should have sounded like a young girl going through a horrific experience
What will your next listen be?
A lighter subject, perhaps Peter James as I enjoy most of his books
How did the narrator detract from the book?
She sounded totally bored and read the whole thing in a monotone.
You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
None. It had the potential to be a great story but I never got a grasp of the true horror that girls in this situation must experience.
