• Summary

  • In "Hardcore History" journalist and broadcaster Dan Carlin takes his "Martian", unorthodox way of thinking and applies it to the past. Was Alexander the Great as bad a person as Adolf Hitler? What would Apaches with modern weapons be like? Will our modern civilization ever fall like civilizations from past eras? This isn't academic history (and Carlin isn't a historian) but the podcast's unique blend of high drama, masterful narration and Twilight Zone-style twists has entertained millions of listeners.

The Atlantic Slave Trade mixes centuries of human bondage with violence, economics, commerce, geo-political competition, liberty, morality, injustice, revolution, tragedy and bloody reckonings. That sounds like a lot, yet this show merely scratches the surface of this enormous subject.

Best Story Teller Of All Time

When I was introduced to hard core history it was Death throws the republic. I have been hooked ever since. This guy has a gift. All students of history should be exposed to this podcast.

CRAPPY AUDIBLE PLATFORM -- FANTASTIC CONTENT

This is obviously a podcast that Audible is trying to incorporate to provide more free content. The podcast itself is fantastic, but the production by Audible sucks. The program initially was initially started on my web browser, but later could not be pulled up despite repeated attempts. The program was stuck "buffering". I tried other books to see if my internet speed was the issue, and it is not. Rather, it is Audible's system on this podcast. This caused me to also loose the location where I had left off. Makes me want to avoid Audible podcasts for now.

Dan is the best, listen to them all.

Now I can get Dan Carlin on Audible?! Good for Dan, his podcasts have been top of the field for a long time now. If you like being told gripping history stories by a master story teller you will enjoy these shows. It takes time to set stages the way he does so if the 30 minute quick format is what you prefer you might struggle but most audio book listeners will feel right at home.

Best podcast ever, Period!

The in depth research, along with the seemingly effortless storytelling, make this the best podcast I’ve found. I’ve listened to all available episodes (multiple times) including those you can purchase from his website (older episodes). Which I highly suggest. I received my B.A. in history and in my opinion, formats like this are the future of education. As they engage the listener in ways that text cannot. Amazing work Dan keep it up!

(and by have read I obviously mean listen to on audible now available you should totally pick it up.)
It can feel very lonely other people don't seem to know who Sargon was, or why Darius was the evil genius super villain emperor he was. so thank you big man for reading the books I love and I'm talking about them on the interwebs.

Persian fire by Tom Holland is available on audible
The great courses includes all of Ken Harrell's stuff which you should totally read as well (read)

BEST PODCAST ON THE INTERNET

I don't write reviews unless I really want to promote a piece of content. There has never been something that deserved promotion more than this.

The Master

There simply is nothing to compare Dan's podcasts to today. He likes to talk about one of the greatest ancient storytellers, Herodotus. He is the modern version, and everyone who listens anxiously awaits the next one!

Truly life changing!

A podcast that establishes a legacy carving the name Dan Carlin into stone, nothing more needs to be said.... If you've got the time you're doing yourself a disservice by not listening.

A page turner of a podcast.

Maybe THE best history series/podcast available. Gruesome but awesome and so thorough in its expositions into the human extremes. I hope audible would get more of the HCH series as purcaseable products.

Entertaining and thought provoking

I've listened to Dan's podcast series for years. Not only have they broadened my knowledge of history, he provides reading lists for all of his shows which take you even further. Working fulltime with family duties, the main time i get to spend indulging in my love of history is listening to Dan in the car to and from work. The quality and entertainment value derived from his podcasts more than makes up for the lack of time i now have. If you haven't heard any of his stuff, I highly recommend taking a deep dive and selecting one of his many shows on your topic of interest.

Brilliant. Different to normal history content

I have listened to all of these podcasts several times over(there are over 50 I think, check out his website for the rest) and not every episode is exactly my cup of historical tea but they're all done very well and told in such a way that you feel like you're having a great conversation with somebody about a certain historical period. He takes a very logical human approach to telling these histories. Great listens for beginner fans of history and those more well read alike I think. Thanks so much Dan Carlin for all this work, it sparked a fire in me for history that won't be extinguished until I breathe my last!

brilliant podcast - my favourite source of history

I have listened to all of Dan's Hardcore history podcasts.. there are way more than the 12 on here. I purchased the others via his website and highly recommend them if you enjoyed these!
there is about 80+(most of them in excess of 1-2hrs)!
Dan is a knowledgeable, fun and humble narrator. I recall when I first heard him I didn't like the thick Amercian accent, and then it grows on you, I very much enjoy his voice now! Highly recommend!
