Publisher's summary

They killed my sister and infected me.

Now I have to pick up the pieces before I die.

I've spent the last five months trying to find the bastard who did this. Yet, even with the help of a hot amnesiac vampire named Jude, I've had zero luck.

Until now. And it could change everything. Even though I grew up in a family that hunted the supernatural, there were still things I didn't believe in.

Now I have to hurry for the slim chance that I could save us all. Because when you fight against immortal vampires, you're the one who's running out of time.

What's a Harper?

Any additional comments?

( A FEW SPOILERS) ok, this is again, one of those books wrote like your audience is 12. The Harper's, a long line of supernatural killers from centuries past. The oldest daughter in the Harper family receives magical strength, a cool sword that magically comes out of her wrist and the skills to fight an army. Right from the beginning we play stupid with the intelligent reader. The two Harper sisters are shopping for Christmas, they know the boogie men come out at dark, yet they are walking to their car like it's broad day light. suddenly they are attacked by 8-10 vampires, the oldest sister, the chosen one is kicking butt and taking names but the younger, but adult sister is cowering behind her car door. (by the way being a Harper even though not chosen does have some weak powers) The girls is so petrified she can't come up with a spell in her head to help her sister so she just watches. She is in so much fear she can't move while her older sitter is fighting for their lives. Then the vampire in charge tells the chosen one, give up or your sister dies. And what does the famous Harper do without a further fight? Let's the vampires tear her apart from her neck down to her abdomen and yes it was made graphic, and the little sister gets chewed on and mixing her blood with vampire blood is going to having her dying a painful death. So she basically has 6 months to find her sisters killer or she won't be able to rest after dying. And she is so dang dumb at it, it's not even funny. She and her sister has been training their whole lives for this but yet she never thought she would ever become "The Harper" THE END Don't bother if you have intelligence I only listened to the second to book to find out what happens to Jude the just as stupid vampire that is in love with her.

Well done!

urban-fantasy, ghosts, vampire, vampire-slayers, romance, action-adventure, suspense, magic

Suspenseful and with lots of action, this book gives a rather different slant on the whole vampire scene and the role of the Harker family. The writing is absorbing and the characters are engaging. It really caught me and kept me reading when I should have been taking care of other things. No sense in giving a synopsis when the publisher's blurb takes care of that. I enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
Kristin James has a real talent for giving the characters definition and life.
This came as Whispersync on the cheap.

Great Paranormal Romance

One of my favorite genre's is paranormal romance. This story drew me in and I had a hard time putting it down. The story was unique and nothing like the typical vampire story.

Edie is a descendent from a line of vampire hunters known as the "Harker". After her sister's death, Edie has to take her place as the Harker.
She is out for revenge to kill the Vampire that killed her sister and infected her. She only has a short time to live and time is running out for her.

Her cousin Carl and Jude are helping her find information she needs. Jude is an unusual vampire that has lost his memory but has strong feelings for Edie. He will do anything to protect her.

The story is well written and I always understood what was going on. There is magic, violence, suspense, drama, romance, and betrayal. I was shocked with the twist at the end. It was not a predictable one and caught me by surprise. It ends with a Cliffhanger that leaves you craving more. I can't wait to read book 2.

Kristin James did an awesome job reading this book. I'll be looking into some more of the stories she has read. Great performance.

I'll be looking out for more books written by Erin Hayes as well. She has created a great world in "Dammned If I Do" and I'm looking forward to reading more of her books.

Surprised

I normally don’t read books like this...but... I was pleasantly surprised. I actually didn’t want to stop! Erin has a great imagination. Didn’t see that twist in the end coming. Needless to say I’ll buy book 2. The Harker isn’t a badass heroic heroine and I think that what makes this book good. I guess I’m so use to the heroine being better and stronger with all the answers but she was a regular woman with powers that makes mistakes. I liked her.

Disappointing

I really wanted to like this series - I kept hanging in there but I barely finished the first book. This is YA for a young audience and actually, they might find it lacking. The characters are flat - with no depth and this is not enhanced by the narration which is monotonous -- the only voice that stood out was the child and eventually - even that got to be a one-note pony.

If you have a preteen who is into vamp stories - this is probably acceptable l-- but if you are an adult -- pass on this one.

Not a bad start

I like this book but it feels just a tad new author or kinda middle school to me. I little jumpy in places and not smooth changes. I will still most likely read the next one to see what happens,

HOLY SH*T! Did that just happen!?

The ending blew my mind away! Loved it! Did NOT see this coming! Relax, no spoilers here.

I picked this up expecting a repeat of Erin's other Harker Series and was mildly disappointed to see this is an Urban Fantasy/Paranormal. Once I wrapped my head around the setting and new characters I was back into this. Love the story. Love the narrative. Love the writing. Was blown away by the ending! Still can not believe an author would end the book as this one ended.

Not a bad ending. Amazingly unpredictable!

eh..could be better.

The story is just ok, the main character cries a lot, I mean a lot. She's not a very strong female lead for the story. With this being said it does keep your intrest. The story is told in harpers point of view and judes point of view so it flips back and forth which is annoying to me. Also, the author needs more variaty with the names of the characters I sometimes got confused with who was named what. The narrator has a pleasant voice but she cannot do accents or male voices. For some reason when the main character thinks certain things she makes it echo as if we cannot figure out that it's a thought, it's very distracting and takes away from the story. It's not so bad that you dont want to finish the story but it is a bit of work.

A Harker is a Vamp Hunter!

Damned If I Do
The Harker Trilogy Book 1
By: Erin Hayes
Narrated by: Kristin James
This was a pretty good vamp book. Not like others. The vamp hunter is a Harker, a magical being that can turn one of her hands into a sword. There are only a handful of Harkers left. It goes to the oldest female. They killed her sister, her older sister! Now she is the Harker. The only other female is her niece, her sister's little daughter. They are after her now and she has to protect herself and her family. The only one not trying to kill her is a vampire that has amnesia from before...Jude. He has been her friend and is helping her now that her sister is gone. But the immortal vamps know him...how? Great read!!!
The narrator is wonderful! Great performance!

So bad.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Though I don't believe this was intended to be YA, I believe, in terms of sophistication, it more suitable for young listeners. The writing struck me as incredibly immature, and generally lacking depth.

Has Damned If I Do turned you off from other books in this genre?

No way!

Would you be willing to try another one of Kristin James’s performances?

Probably not. Her voice wasn't especially nice to listen to, and her voice for the male character was truly dreadful.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Eye-rolls. Lots of eye-rolls.
