Publisher's Summary

New York Times bestselling author Mike Omer returns with chilling twists and turns for a hostage negotiator with a dark past in this explosive second installment of the Abby Mullen Thrillers.

As a child, Abby Mullen escaped the insidious Wilcox cult when it literally went down in flames. Years later, she’s the NYPD’s best hostage negotiator and a mother. She thought the worst part of her life was behind her. Until now. Armed conspiracy theorists called the Watchers have attacked the local high school - and taken her daughter hostage.

With the delusional Watchers holding her child at gunpoint, the unflappable Abby might be at her breaking point. But the clock is ticking on her daughter’s life, and she has no choice but to negotiate with the paranoid group and discover their leader’s secret before it’s too late.

As Abby peels back the layers of mystery surrounding the Watchers, there’s always another puzzle underneath. And it seems to be leading back to the dark past she’s spent her whole life trying to forget.

I love this author but….

This series is my least favorite of the ones that I have listened to. Also, the main character of this series is irritating. Overall her whole family was annoying. The female narrator gets screechy and whines a lot. Her parts are difficult to get through. I recognized some passages from one of his other series in this one too.

I really enjoyed this

I like Mike Omer’s work. The writer in me wants to introduce him to a better editor to clean up some of the repetition in the writing, but that’s really my only ‘niggle’. Omer knows how to play with emotions, and his storytelling and character building are solid.
I’m so glad he made Samantha more three dimensional in this novel, because I disliked her character before this. In this novel she actually made me cry a little, which means I was invested. The cross over at the end had me excited

Meh…

As far as books go, this one was good. As far as Mike Omer books go… not so much. It’s by far my least favorite book from him and I preorder all his books. It deals with conspiracy theories and conspiracy theory groups- specifically QAnon. Which is fine if you’re into stuff like that but I’m not so it’s hard to buy the storyline. It took a long time to get going and then the climax was pretty underwhelming. Also I’m not crazy about Abby- idk what it is about her character… too much internal dialogue I think. Regardless, I’ll still get the next Omer book that’s released right away but I have to admit I was happy this one finally ended.

Not nearly as good as the first

Same great characters, still a good story but the non-stop action creates such a different feel.

Endured instead of enjoyed, disjointed second installment

I didn’t expect this storyline given the first Abby Mullen thriller I read, which I greatly enjoyed. It seemed too contrived, and didn’t advance the overall Abby Mullen story as the previous book’s ending cliffhanger had set the reader up for. It felt like an odd and unnecessarily violent installment in between other books. I will continue to read the Abby Mullen thrillers but this one was not one I can say I greatly enjoyed, rather I endured it hoping the next one gets better.

Hard to finish

We got it. Patriots=Conspiracy Theorists=Radical Murders. Still shaking my head, needless to say I won't be downloading the next book.

Book 2 is not related to Book 1

If you read Book 1 of the Abby Mullen series, and the ending of that book has you anxious to learn more, well, you can pretty much skip this book. It's an OK book, but unexpectedly, this story barely advances or even deals with the ending and key issues dealt with in Book 1. Honestly, it's a barely ok, thrown together, book.

Psychos

This book is full of them. Crazy people who have cults , who brainwashed their followers. The leader who thinks he is the messiah , and controls their life to the point of murder.
Book is slow at the beginning, but quickly changes to a lot of excitement, and violence then you can’t put it down.

Frustrating

The “bad guys” are annoying, and I feel that too much time was given to their crazy theories. The story dragged a little bit finally got good. Worthwhile if you follow the author and his characters.

Great book

This is an excellent audiobook, although tough to listen to in parts if you have anyone close to you who subscribes to extreme conspiracy theories. It’s a book I would have no problem recommending to a friend. Thank you Mike Omer.
