A Reese's Book Club + Hello Sunshine on Audible Pick

"My March pick is here! It’s Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and it ROCKS. Literally. The story centers on the meteoric rise of a rock band in the '70s and its lead singers, Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne, whose connection is as electric as the music they make together. It’s sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll, people!! And the very best part?! Hello Sunshine is turning this into a TV show with Amazon Studios...so stay tuned for more updates!" (Reese Witherspoon)

A gripping novel about the whirlwind rise of an iconic 1970s rock group and their beautiful lead singer, revealing the mystery behind their infamous breakup.

Daisy is a girl coming of age in LA in the late '60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock ’n’ roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road. Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the '70s. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with Daisy Jones & The Six, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice.

Includes a PDF of song lyrics from the book.

Critic reviews

“I devoured Daisy Jones & The Six in a day, falling head over heels for it. Taylor Jenkins Reid transported me into the magic of the ’70s music scene in a way I’ll never forget. The characters are beautifully layered and complex. Daisy and the band captured my heart, and they’re sure to capture yours, too.” (Reese Witherspoon)

“This stylish and propulsive novel, presented in the form of an oral history, explores the ascent of a (fictional) hard-partying, iconic 1970s rock band. It reads like the transcript of a particularly juicy episode of VH1’s ‘Behind the Music.’" (The New York Times Book Review, Editors’ Choice)

Daisy Jones & The Six is just plain fun from cover to cover.... Her characters feel so vividly real, you’ll wish you could stream their albums, YouTube their concerts, and google their wildest moments to see them for yourself.” (HelloGiggles)

Amazing performance

I have listened to countless books over the last 5+ years and this is the best Audible performance to date. I really enjoyed the multiple narrators. Each was very authentic to the character. The story is simply magical. The author transported me to a different place and time and I still can’t believe this is not a real
band!

An Immense Void of Sadness but a Ball of Hope

I cried for 5 minutes after the completion of this audiobook. There honestly are no words if I'm going to keep this short. So I'll just tell you to read it!

Train wreck- in a good way

This is an amazing audio book! It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion- you can't look away. And the ensemble cast is terrific!

A fictional band that I wished I'd seen live!

This is my favorite book so far this year! After seeing a review written by a good friend, I added it to my "to read" list with one click. I listened to this book via audible (9 hours 3 minutes) which I think was a great decision because the many voices in the narration were great, and you could really believe that Daisy Jones & The Six WAS one of the biggest bands of the 70's!
The story of how the band came together, and broke up at the peak of their popularity, is told via a series of interviews, with commentary from each character spliced together to tell their story.
I was confused when I started listening - not because the story was unclear; it grabbed me within minutes! It was because I was expecting fiction, and the interviews with the band members sounded so authentic that I thought I was listening to a band history! I had to stop and Google "Daisy Jones & The Six" to be sure this wasn't some huge band that I had never heard of! OK, so it is truly fiction, but so totally believable!
I am not a musician, but I have family members who are, which may have made this more relevant to me. I also like Rock and Roll! (Interestingly enough, my favorite book in 2018 was "The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto, " also about a musician!)
As the story unfolds, it fascinated me to hear two or three characters recall the same situation so differently. Everybody has baggage, and their individual perspectives on what was said, who was slighted, who felt this way or that way, who was controlling, who understood love, what addiction feels like, etc., etc. was just so real! The reminder that "what you think is happening comes only from your own point of view" is present over and over again.
There were two great quotes about love that I bookmarked-text and punctuation not exact, since I listened to the book and didn't see these in print:
"I used to think soulmates were two of the same. I used to think I was supposed to look for somebody that was just like me. I don't believe in soulmates anymore, but if I did, I'd believe that your soulmate is somebody who had all the things you didn't; that needed all the things you had, not somebody who was suffering for the same stuff you are." ~ Karen Karen
"When you really love someone, sometimes the things they need may hurt you, and some people are worth hurting for. Loving somebody isn't perfection - good times, laughing, and making love. Love is forgiveness and patience and faith, and every once in awhile, it's a gut punch and that's why it's a dangerous thing when you go loving the wrong person - when you love somebody who doesn't deserve it. You have to be with someone that deserves your faith, and you have to be deserving of someone else's. It's sacred." ~Billy Dunne
Loved this story.

A great ride of a novel. Loved the story line and the participation of many actores retelling their story. Easy to follow and compelling reliving the 60-70 music scene

Complicated but ....

The storyline was compelling at times. All the different people narrating helped keep track of the almost, stream-of-conscience style of writting. Rock on!!

Amazing

My only regret is that there isn’t a full musical score to accompany the production. Incredible.
