Malaysia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Monday, that Myanmar’s military regime has expressed willingness to repatriate 5,000 refugees currently in Malaysia by ship.

Mohamad Hasan emphasized that while Malaysia has identified the initial group, any transfer remains strictly contingent on comprehensive safety and security guarantees.

Kim Aris, Aung San Suu Kyi’s son living in London, welcomed news of the meeting with the ICRC but urged international observers to maintain caution regarding her health and living conditions.

“While this news gives me hope, I remain cautious… One reported meeting cannot answer the questions my family has lived with for more than five years,” said Aris in a statement on Aug. 3. Aris launched the “Proof of Life” campaign in April to force the regime to provide independent verification that his mother is alive and well.
