Publisher's summary

In the multibillion-dollar business of American medicine, doctors are often portrayed as culprits—opportunistic millionaires who prey on the misfortune of their hapless patients and drive up the cost of health care. But often they are the real victims of a system designed to increase profits for the insurance companies, shady businessmen, and Big Government.

When Dr. Steven Cyr first opened his own practice, his focus was on providing the very best care for his patients, improving spine surgery results, and running an ethical business. He soon discovered that just because you play by the rules, it doesn’t mean everyone else will.

Despite following the law to the letter, Dr. Cyr was descended upon by cutthroat businessmen, jealous colleagues, federal agents, and ambitious lawyers. Their barrage of legal attacks and false claims culminated in him being targeted for federal indictment and nearly losing everything he owned, including his good name and his home. Only through God’s grace, the love of his wife, and a steadfast faith in doing what’s right was he able to find the strength to overcome the forces aligned against him.

Cutthroat provides an insider’s perspective on the many battles that doctors fight for their patients and their practices and exposes the truth about the complex financial, legal, and regulatory pressures faced by doctors who enter the business world. It’s a wake-up call for a health-care industry that has lost its way.

Blindsided

As an active RN practicing in San Antonio, Texas, all I can say is I was truly blindsided by the knowledge I gleaned from this book. I, myself, had been under the scalpel by Dr. Steven Cyr as he corrected horrid surgery failures by other doctors that had led to catastrophic outcomes; the last one being told by a physician who had operated on me three times and was then telling me I needed more surgery but would still end up in a wheelchair. My husband and I immediately grabbed my medical records and left. Dr. Cyr was to have done the original surgery but instead was deployed. The doctor who he referred me to did not carry through on his word of doing my surgery the way it had been discussed and agreed upon. After so many failures and a total of ten surgeries, and his return from Iraq, I called his office and he was appalled at all that had taken place. I was finally in the hands of the doctor whose hands were blessed by God’s grace. He treated me like I was his family, like I was his sister, and my husband as his brother. I never felt such ease before. And believe me when I say I knew I was finally where I should be. Dr Cyr was like no other surgeon I’d ever encountered. He put me at ease while filling me with a peace I’d never known in a doctor’s hands before.
I’m not saying recuperation was easy. Those first few days I actually begged my sister to kill me because of the pain. But stopped really quick when she whispered in my ear, “You don’t understand. Dr Cyr just saved your life. You had a cage wrapped around your aorta filled with splinters of medical cement. If you would have fallen one more time you would have died.” WHOA!!! WHAT??? Why did the previous surgeon do that? How could he not have known? So in all truthfulness Dr Cyr not only gave me back the ability to continue walking but he gave me back my life.

This book tells you of our flawed medical system. I knew of some of this, which turned out to be very little when it came down to it. Dr. Cyr has written an eye-opening book here. Being in the medical profession as a Registered Nurse is nothing compared to a Physician/Surgeon. I now feel as if I’d been walking through my entire career in the dark with no walls around to guide me. So if you want to know the truth about our Medical System you have to read this book. It will definitely open up your eyes and shock you with the truth! It is definitely one to share with a loved one, be it friend or family.

Mind Blowing!!

This is a great story about a surgeon who was trying to do the right thing, and almost had his whole career destroyed for it! I really appreciated the physician's point of view on the health care system.

Well said

as a fellow spine surgeon in California, I think dr. cyr has properly summarized the problems in our field at this time. When you take the free market out of the patient's hand, it leads to worse care and more expensive care. Here's hoping some good will come from your story. I agree that physicians need to unionize.
