Fantastic book for teachers- pity about the charts

This book was such an eye-opener for me. I loved that Zaretta Hammond narrates it herself. I don't think I would have absorbed the information so well had another narrator been at the helm due to her clear authority on the subject. I especially appreciated all of the neurologic data included, which greatly helps me understand the sometimes unpredictable behavior of my underprivileged students. I even used her information about the amygdala as the basis for one of my first lessons on the first day of school, so they can start to recognize if it is being hijacked, and how to cope with it. Every time I was a little baffled at the information presented, Hammond clarifies with an anecdotal illustration. Overall the book makes the recent sociological and psychological data that is relevant to teachers accessible and digestible.

There were a lot of references to charts. I looked up the book and was sent to a website, but it wasn't clear if I could see the charts based on my purchase of the audiobook or if I would need to pay $150 for a special online course to become more culturally responsive. I must say I'm tempted to take the course, but I would have liked to have been able to see the data to whichHammond was referring.

Perfect for an Interview!

I am a recently graduated MAT and this was perfect to listen to while I was driving to interviews. It reignites my passion for urban education whenever I read it and people were blown away with how well-read I was. I now have a full time job just one month after graduating!

just buy the book

I got the audio version of this book in hopes it might be a little easier to listen to than read but that was not the case. Somehow the reader made the audio version even more dry and boring than just reading the book myself.

Good information

This was a great book with very important information. What takes away from it is the constant mispronunciations of Latino names and even the misspelling of some of them on print. Being that this book is about cultural responsiveness I see this as a big fault on the part of the reader, author, and editors.

I have completed my summer reading. This book is packed with ideas for a culturally responsive classroom, keeping in mind all learners in your classroom. It has great online resources and other recommendations for books and resources to continue your growth. A must read for every teacher, whether it’s your first year, or you’ve been in the practice for many.

The gives insight in multiculturalism education using a combination of anthropology, psychology, and neuroscience .The author uses examples that are relevant to educate the reader on the diverse neighborhoods and communities in their schools .

good food for the brain

I am so glad I purchased this audiobook so I can use this as a tool for my own personal growth and professional development. there is still so much we have to learn as human beings.
