Crowded in the Middle of Nowhere: Tales of Humor and Healing from Rural America is a collection of humorous and poignant stories from a veterinarian in a small, dusty farming and ranching community in rural West Texas. Dr. Brock gives you an intimate look into his small-town and big-hearted perspective on life, animals, and their owners. His unique perspective and tales of doctoring beloved pets, cantankerous livestock, and occasionally their owners will make you smile, laugh, cry, and evoke every other emotion under the sun.

This is the most enjoyable book I’ve read in years I hope I can find more by this author he has a wonderful way of describing situations that are so interesting and humorous at the same time. If the world was filed with people like this it would be wonderful peaceful intelligent and kind. He has a wonderful way of passing on knowledge to the next generation hat no one else has and we sure can use it.

Wonderful book my favorite

This book is terrific in so many ways. The American wit and wisdom is so refreshing as are the stories. What really makes the book is the narrator Lewis Arlt. He literally makes you believe you are sitting across from and listening to a country vet from Texas reminisce about his life. I listen to so many books and in my opinion the narrator makes it or breaks it. If you have listened to the Remains of the Day narrated by Simon Prebble you know what I mean. Lewis Arlt is in that rarefied class and this book is a gem.

Incredible Book and Narrator Lewis Arlt

One of the few audiobooks that I couldn’t wait to get back to and finish up. Captures the essence of relationships between people and animals in small towns.

My large animal veterinarian father was this story and more…also a graduate of Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine who practiced in a small Texas town, drove hundreds of miles in his mobile vet-clinic truck to care for rural cattle, horses, sheep, elk and anything else he got called out to help. He practiced until he was 85 years old when his body, especially his knees and legs just couldn’t hang any longer. Brock’s tales were ones I lived with my father and I laughed and cried through this, remembering so many wonderful memories of a life well lived, loved and respected by so many. Thanks for bringing this to life for me, Dr. Brock!

Thank you for the inside look into the life of a country vet: the good, the bad, and the surprisingly funny/real stories of someone growing into their profession and learning along the way--all those things they don't tell you in the books. A fun listen told in short anecdotes that don't each require a huge time commitment. Just what I needed!
