Publisher's summary

Nanabush. A name that has a certain weight on the tongue - a taste. Like lit sage in a windowless room or aluminum foil on a metal filling.

Trickster. Storyteller. Shape-shifter. An ancient troublemaker with the power to do great things, only he doesn’t want to put in the work.

Since coming home to Spirit Bear Point First Nation, Hazel Ellis has been dreaming of an old crow. He tells her he’s here to help her, save her. From what, exactly? Sure, her dad’s been dead for almost two years and she hasn’t quite reconciled that grief, but is that worth the time of an Algonquin demigod?

Soon Hazel learns that there’s more at play than just her own sadness and doubt. The quarry that’s been lying unsullied for over a century on her father’s property is stirring the old magic that crosses the boundaries between this world and the next. With the aid of Nanabush, Hazel must unravel a web of deceit that, if left untouched, could destroy her family and her home on both sides of the Medicine Wheel.

Captivating story with a fantastic narrator

I often listen to audiobooks as I fall asleep. When I started this book, I got so engrossed in it that I couldn’t fall asleep. The story is absolutely riveting and the author does a great job of writing characters you instantly engage with and care about. I also really love the narration by Kaniehtiio Horn. She’s got a great voice and a wonderful cadence that ebbs and flows perfectly with the prose. I can’t wait for her to narrate more books!

A Must Read

A beautiful story. I dont know what more to say. the plot was great, with just the right amount of mystery and supernatural to give it intrigue without forcing anything.

Read This Book

That was simply put, a perfect book. I have always been attracted to mythology from an early age. Greek, Roman, Norse, Egyptian, Asian and Native. My fascination with the various trickster gods has helped me discover a number of authors I may not have come across otherwise. Ms. McBride is an author that I hope to read more of. Her ability to weave myth with contemporary fiction was flawless. I loved her characters with their depth of feelings for one another. This book awakened all my senses. I could see, taste, feel and smell. All that and the sound of a lone crow.

interesting story and great narration. I really liked learning about a culture I know very little about, and her writing felt very genuine.

A Moving Experience

The story is truly beautiful. Following Hazel Ellis as she discovers her her inner self as both an Indian and a modern young woman was delightful.

Crow Calls to Bring You To Your True Purpose

Crow Winter by Karen McBride is mesmerizing in the best way. The direction that the story took changed much like a river over time. I appreciated the way that the author presented elements of Algonquin culture and beliefs within the context of modern life and technology. The characters are well drawn and the dialogue rings true. The narration performance by Kaniehtiio Horn is very good and it supports the material well. I would recommend this book to mystery fans as well as those who enjoy learning about history, mythology, and the cultures of indigenous peoples.
