The Nyctus don’t like losing, and they’ll go to any lengths to turn the tides of war.
When the idyllic planet Nebo is scorched into oblivion, it’s obvious that the Nyctus are moving massive fleets into human space again, and their intention is clear: Even if they lose their ships, they will render planets into ash. To add to the damage, they seem to have key intelligence that could only have been obtained by a human crew.
Only one ship has ever gone missing, its disappearance unexplained and its crew never to be found: The Pool of Stars, one of the first starships. And she’s been missing for centuries.
Now, after all these years, it’s up to Thorn to find it, for her disappearance might hold the key to victory.

First, the Nyctus destroy an entire world. All the Starcasters mentally see a vision of a young girl with immense power fighting to survive. So, we have that going on in the background.
Then we have a distress signal from a ship that has been missing for hundreds of years - The Pool of Stars. And the signal comes from beyond Nyctus space. And this seems to be the basis for the entire book, with other plot elements placed on top.
So, Thorn takes off with a fighter pilot and two Special Ops agents - and he is very suspicious of the agents because one of the subplots deals with spies amongst the humans. Thorn uses his unique abilities to transport the ship to where he believes the distress signal is coming from because the nose art on the missing ship is similar to the young girl they all saw in their vision. But when they get there - no ship. BUT there are two star systems nearby that he wants to investigate. For some reason, he does NOT use the same link - young girl/nose art - to continue to find the ship. They travel through both systems.
Well, the two Special Ops agents, who he is suspicious of, get the drop on him, wipe the AI of the ship, and are planning on taking him to the Nyctus. Of course, he and the pilot, Mol, get out of that one - and that part of the story is good - but I am disappointed he didn't see it coming!!! He even states he is keeping an eye on them!!! Come on!!
The story resolves itself and most of the subplots, BUT the missing ship just kind of drops off the table. No idea what was broadcasting the distress signal, not sure if the missing ship even exists, no idea why the young girl was tied to the nose art - just nothing.
I am going to continue reading because I do want to finish the series, but the inconsistencies and the weak continuity are becoming seriously frustrating!! I am hoping for better in the final 3 books.
Inconsistency
