‘Cricket and Authors: E.V. Lucas, Oscar Wilde & Siegfried Sassoon’, the eighth monograph in the James D. Coldham Series reflects my father’s love of books, bookmen and writing. He greatly admired E.V. Lucas, and he was honoured to correspond with and meet Siegfried Sassoon. This monograph – a short piece about Oscar Wilde apart – comprises a biographical sketch of E.V. Lucas, one of cricket’s great men of letter, and a short essay concerning Siegfried Sassoon’s love for cricket and examples of his early cricket-related poetry. In publishing ‘Cricket and Authors’ I am doing what my father would have done had he lived in our marvellously inter-connected age – making this material available to the widest possible audience. It is the editor’s hope that the publication of ‘Cricket and Authors’ will be of assistance to researchers and fellow cricketana aficionados everywhere, and perhaps shed new light on two great literary figures.
