Publisher's Summary

Quinn McKenzie has always lived what she calls a "beige" life. She's dating the world's nicest guy, she has a good job as a high school art teacher, she's surrounded by family and friends who rely on her, and she's bored to the point of insanity. But when Quinn decides to change her life by adopting a stray dog over everyone's objections, everything begins to spiral out of control. Now she's coping with dog-napping, breaking and entering, seduction, sabotage, stalking, more secrets than she really wants to know, and two men who are suddenly crazy for her.

Critic Reviews

"The story comes together with just the right touches of humor and some pretty sexy dialogue. Crusie hasn't yet achieved the name recognition of Sandra Brown or Nora Roberts, but this effort proves she is every bit as good." ( Library Journal)

Abridging leaves a lot to be desired.

I gave this book 3 stars because it is abridged. The narrator is great and I love Jennifer Crusie novels, but a lot of good stuff was left out. Notably, the subplot of Darla and Max trying to rekindle their relationship. Also the transitions between scenes felt awkward and unnatural. I would give 5 stars to an unabridged recording of the book with the same narrator. Next time I buy an audiobook, I will be checking carefully to make sure it is not an abridged version

Abridged sneak attack

This is one of my favorite books by this author, but I realized about halfway through that there were major gaps in the story. They took out not only the supporting characters and their conversations, but also major scenes that were important to the plot.

Wish this was available in an unabridged version!

Jennifer Crusie is as funny and insightful about relationships between men and women as always. Lots of food for thought as to when courting turns from pursuit into stalking or worse, and what's behind that behaviour. Sandra Burr's narration is top notch, giving each character a personality and voice of their own.
It's a very good abridgement, but I wish there were an unabridged version available.

creepy

I enjoyed this book, but it wasn't the typical Jennifer Crusie book to me. I didn't see much depth in the romantic part of the story. I wasn't really fond of the "hero." He was kind of a jerk, in my eyes-- and didn't really redeem himself and I didn't get why she liked him so much. The other characters were pretty fun, and some of the situations made me smile (which is why I gave the book a relatively high rating). Some situations were kind of intense, which makes for a fun book. Don't want to spoil anything, but I think it was a relatively fun read.

Narrator was great to my ears!

great book when unabridged

i love the book and the narrator is great. however, i didn't realize this was the abridged version. i knocked off a couple of stars because i missed the stuff they left out, and it costs too much to be incomplete. my fault for not paying attention, but still, it's abridged, and not as good as the complete story.

Love the author, pissed that it's abridged.

I would not have spent $17 on this audiobook if I had realized that it's not the whole story. really disappointing.

Abridged

The hatchet job they did to abridge the story really ruined it for me. The narrator did well enough.

Stalker crazy, not fun rom-com crazy; be warned

Big problems with this book. I don't recommend it.

First, it's abridged and hard to notice that when you buy it (wish I'd read the reviews). I never intentionally buy abridged versions so this was disappointing. Though considering the problems with this book, perhaps it doesn't matter...

Now onto my problem with the content (which is the main reason for my low rating):
This is not a fun rom-com/chick lit story. There's stalking, domestic violence, animal abuse, institutionalized sexism, and some really gross ideas about relationships. I didn't even finish the book once I realized it wasn't really going to get better (listened to 2/3 of it). I've been reading lots of Jennifer Crusie recently and I think she's great and her books are very fun, but this one is seriously messed up. I love the concept, but this one went to a dark place really fast.

Honestly, what the ex puts the dog through is enough on its own to sour me on this book. No thank you.
