Publisher's summary

Shelby Moore is no stranger to ghosts. Landing her dream job as a location scout for a wildly popular paranormal television show seems like an act of fate. But she never thought she'd find herself so close and face-to-face with the darkness from the other side.

Her first location is a game changer.

The Parkesburg Sanatorium has been abandoned for over 30 years, with nothing more than a demented caretaker to watch over it. After decades of abuse, the asylum is infested with the souls of tortured patients. Accompanied by her dog, Fugly, Shelby explores the mammoth building, soon learning that, despite what she thought, ghosts can and will hurt you.

From real-life paranormal investigator and best-selling paranormal author Joni Mayhan comes a tale so frightening and pause-resisting, it could only come from the mind of someone who's seen the paranormal up close and personal.

Book one of the Shelby and Fugly paranormal thriller series.

Don't Listen to this in the Dark!

I love listening to audiobooks laying in bed at night before falling asleep. I set the timer to shut the book off either at the end of the chapter or at a certain minute mark like 30 min or so, just so if I doze off listening I know the book won't be so far ahead that I can't rewind it the next time I listen if I need to.

This book had me hooked immediately. Within the first hour the main character is wandering around this big, creepy, empty asylum all by herself. The caretaker who let her in the building has abandoned her and it's just her and her little companion dog. (Spolier alert, nothing bad happens to the dog in the entire book).

The descriptions of the building, the rooms, the debris, etc are so real, I kept picturing Wavery Place in KY although this story and location are fictional. I have seen enough ghost hunting shows to know if I ever had a chance to visit and tour Waverly Place, I wouldn't want to do it alone. That would be one time I would welcome being in a crowd.

As much as I enjoyed the book and loved the story, there was something about the narration that was just not quite right. I don't think I can describe what about it made me feel like it wasn't quite right. I enjoyed the story so much I was able to overlook the narration issues I was having.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a spooky listen, it is very much worth a credit.

What the F_@K!

The title of my review is an ode to a certain bird in the book that made me laugh over and over 😂. This was a great spooky, funny, touching and lovely gem.
