Publisher's summary

Stan can't afford to have his brain removed. The richest and luckiest players of the video game "Thousand Tales" get their minds uploaded to its virtual paradise world, while Stan can barely buy a handheld console. Instead of sulking he plays, and grows, becoming a skilled craftsman and a seafaring explorer.

The game's ruling AI, Ludo, helps him find the hope and inspiration missing from his real life. When the AI starts asking for favors and having him reach out between the real and digital worlds, Stan has a chance to turn his life into an actual adventure. But first he needs to earn the most valuable prize of all: his freedom.

Crafter's Passion is part of the emerging "LitRPG" or "GameLit" genre, combining science-fiction with the world of gaming.

meh

the story was good but really didn't keep me interested. the only conflict seemed to be the main characters choice for a future. the book is more political science fiction than litrpg.

a nice change

as some one who likes being a crafter in all games its nice to have a story that focuses on crafting rather then generic sword and sorcery.

Not my cup of tea

Not a lit rpg book, the game elements were ok but were completely drowned out by the creepiest interpretation of the future I've seen. Too much politics to make it a book I could enjoy.

Great crafting based LitRPG

'Crafter's Passion' is a really great LitRPG book that is unique in my experience in that it is both light on the stats (not crunchy) and deals with someone looking at the world from a crafting perspective instead of the usually 'slash, slash, loot'.

The only issue I have with the book is that I now REALLY want to play a decent RPG and there isn't anything close.

Better Than Expected

I received a free review copy.

I enjoyed the book. It was better than I expected. The narration was good. It is set in a dystopian future with big brother mandating that young people serve their country in work groups, using social media to monitor them, controlling what they eat, mandating that they engage in community activities, and restricting their Internet access. Stan, the main character, begins covertly playing an online MMO that is off limits. The game enables him to find purpose in building things and helping others but it also creates conflicts with his regimented imposed schedule. The book has limited violence but a lot of crafting.
