Publisher's Summary

God calls us first to himself, to know and follow him, and also to a specific life purpose, a particular reason for being. This second call or "vocation" has implications not only for our work or occupation, but also includes our giftedness, our weaknesses, our life in community, and what we do day to day. In this book Gordon Smith invites you to discover your vocation by listening to God and becoming a coworker with him. What is my calling? How do I live it out in the midst of difficult relationships or moral challenges? Will my vocation change as I enter a new stage of life? With competing needs and demands, how can I craft a balanced way of living?

Courage & Calling by Gordon T. Smith

I downloaded this audible to help me through a class I was taking, but found it to be so very inspiring. Letting one help find themselves at their true calling through the Lord. A must have for every Christian out there! I am now reading it (listening to it) for pure pleasure. A book so worth more than 5 stars!!!

Great book!

I thought the narration sounded a bit snooty and stuck up, almost like he was preaching the book instead of narration. Still, the principles are timeless. Great book!

Lots of Good nuggets; wordy; pretentious narration

I did get a lot out of this book, but it was hard fought. I bounced between the kindle and audible versions because I just could not stand Gregory St. John's delivery. It wasn't even his voice. It was how he read the thing. You may as well have been playing the sound of fingernails scratching a chalkboard for 10hrs. The way he reads is so pretentious, I just couldn't stand it. It got to the point where I couldn't wait to be somewhere where I could just read it on kindle rather than have to listen to the audible. After saying that, I have to say that some of it could have been how this book was written. It's funny that the book talks about not being pretentious but the whole book seems to weave an air of pretension throughout. Gordon Smith (the author) couldn't just say what he had to say, he had to try to be so verbose about it and then say it ten times in different ways. Several chapters went on and on, like this review. It was always seeming like just when the chapter was ending he would start up again and make all the points again in another way. As stated, there are some solid ideas that I am glad to have captured from this book, but it was like mining for gold in a pit of granite while listening to someone scratch their nails across a chalkboard.

Highly Recommended Read

Courage and Calling is a highly recommended read for new readers and believers. Courage and Calling is the first book I have read in college. Gordan T. Smith outlines the variety of roles in our world of careers and stewardship. Smith outlines controversial topics with scripture. He did an excellent job of telling the reader his views on being a child of God while being creative when illustrating roles and gifts. Overall a solid first read.

Good book for vocational discernment

Good book for vocational discernment for college students but also great for those who are changing careers and those retiring especially in this economic climate

Narrow in on Your Calling

This is an awesome book! It helps you narrow in on where God has called you and gives guidance with all the details in between.
I only gave this book 4 stars because the author would often talk about "following coincidence/your gut", but he never mentioned how Scripture talks about the heart and how it is deceitful above all things. So I would encourage reading this book, but I would also encourage studying what the scriptures say about your heart.

A wonderful mistake!

I actually was trying to buy 'Courage to Be' by Paul Tillich. When I realized this mistake, I went ahead and listened. Four stars overall only because it is long, but it is filled with wonderful content. The narration is excellent.
