Publisher's Summary

Success, true love, and the life you've always wanted. Many of us placed our faith in these things, believing they held the key to happiness, but with a sneaking suspicion they might not deliver.

The recent economic meltdown has cast a harsh new light on these pursuits. In a matter of months, fortunes, marriages, careers, and a secure retirement have disappeared for millions of people. No wonder so many of us feel lost, alone, disenchanted, and resentful.

But the truth is that we made lesser gods of these good things - gods that can't give us what we really need. There is only one God who can wholly satisfy our cravings - and now is the perfect time to meet him again, or for the first time.

The Bible tells us that the human heart is an "idol-factory," taking good things and making them into idols that drive us. In Counterfeit Gods, Keller applies his trademark approach to show us how a proper understanding of the Bible reveals the unvarnished truth about societal ideals and our own hearts.

This powerful message will cement Keller's reputation as a critical thinker and pastor, and comes at a crucial time - for both the faithful and the skeptical.

Great book!

This was the first book I have read by Timothy Keller, and I must say it was excellent. I have previously read and listened to books by C.S. Lewis, Ravi Zacharias, A.W. Tozer, and others and Keller matches both the theological consistency and excellent writing of all of them.

He tackles the topic of idols and counterfeit gods very well, and had me taking notes and writing down quotes quite often. It was an enjoyable book to listen to and would listen to it again.

Awesome.

The simplicity and insight that Keller demonstrates is amazing. The narrator was a little subpar, but I found bumping the speed up to 1.5x or 2x helped a ton.

Ouch

Would you listen to Counterfeit Gods again? Why?

Absolutely. Tim Keller touches on so many truths that are so easily overlooked.

What other book might you compare Counterfeit Gods to and why?

I haven't read any other books on idolatry, but Tim Keller's other writings are equally as good.

What about Tom Parks’s performance did you like?

Easy to listen to

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When talking about how idols are not 'bad' things, and diving into what exactly idols are.

Any additional comments?

I wish I could make everyone listen or read to this book!!

Exposé of idolatry

In spirit of Luke 6:13, no man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other. Easy as it may appear, we oft pretend to serve God... but are we? And if not, what stands between us? This work explores the topic with familiar wit, candor and gentleness of Pastor Keller. An engaging read (or listen) for any current or aspiring Christian. The only caveat is, as mentioned by others, a less-than-ideal narration quality. While certainly acceptable, it sounds less consistent and articulate compared to author's own voice, or that of Simon Vance. That said, I still found the audiobook enjoyable, and may very well re-listen it in the near future.

Separates God Priorities from Culture Priorities

This was an incredible read to me. All the clear, detailed, well-researched and bible-centered guidance you'd expect from Tim Keller. This uncovered areas where I knew something was off in my own character but couldn't explain exactly what. I will surely read this book many more times and refer people to this invaluable book.

Really Challenges You to Think

This book helped me identify idols in my life ...especially around work and money...that according to the World standard is good but when we put success and wealth before God is eats away at us and takes our joy ...
