Publisher's summary

A sharply intelligent novel about friendship, lust, jealousy, and the unexpected complications of adulthood in the 21st century

Frances is a cool-headed and darkly observant young woman vaguely pursuing a career in writing while studying in Dublin. Her best friend and comrade-in-arms is the beautiful and endlessly self-possessed Bobbi. At a local poetry performance one night, Frances and Bobbi catch the eye of Melissa, a well-known photographer, and as the girls are then gradually drawn into Melissa's world, Frances is reluctantly impressed by the older woman's sophisticated home and tall, handsome husband, Nick. However amusing and ironic Frances and Nick's flirtation seems at first, it gives way to a strange intimacy, and Frances' friendship with Bobbi begins to fracture. As Frances tries to keep her life in check, her relationships increasingly resist her control: with Nick, with her difficult and unhappy father, and finally, terribly, with Bobbi.

Desperate to reconcile her inner life to the desires and vulnerabilities of her body, Frances' intellectual certainties begin to yield to something new: a painful and disorienting way of living from moment to moment.

Written with gemlike precision and marked by a sly sense of humor, Conversations with Friends is wonderfully alive to the pleasures and dangers of youth and the messy edges of female friendship.

Awesomely sad and altogether great

It's a beautiful and unpretentious book about infatuation and attachment, about feelings which are not governed by morale or ethical principles, about times when we just cannot fight them.
The narration is amazing, as well.

Listened to this in one day!

I absolutely enjoyed this book so much. The complexity of the relationships can be so relatable to a person. The internal thoughts and overthinking aspects too. The want to keep things in and be strong. At least for me, I felt there were so many parts of the story where I found myself deep in thought or laughing because I could see myself having that inner convo.

Anyways, really enjoyed it! Going to watch the series on Hulu!

My favorite Rooney story yet

Words don’t do it justice, definitely give this a listen! I loved it and felt very connected with all of the characters, flaws and all.

I will not buy another Sally Rooney book unless…

I have time to binge it. I should have worked today, but I couldn’t stop myself from finishing such an emotional story. Thank you to Ms. Rooney and Ms. McMahon!

4.30 stars

I downloaded this one because I recently listened to and enjoyed Normal People, Sally Rooney’s most recent novel. Rooney has a distinct writing style, which is descriptive and insightful. If you like one of her books you’re surely to like her other. But, You have to like character driven narratives. That doesn’t mean the plot isn’t interesting. It is. The narrator is also really good. I’m impressed by this lady’s writing.

slow start forgettable

I might not be the demographic for this novel I thought it started very slowly and I wasn't really that interested in the characters or their actions it was easy to listen to and finish but didn't leave a lasting impression.

Riveting relationship realism

Conversations with Friends is intriguing and engrossing. You can dislike the characters and find the plot troubling, but still hang on every word. It makes the pleasure of literature problematic.

OK

the narrator was great, the story was OK but I think I was expecting more because of all of the hype this book got. maybe just not my cup of tea.

Endless narcissism

I struggled to like any of the characters in this story because of the complete lack of regard for the damage each inflicts on others in order to satisfy their need for instant gratification. The unconventional relationships feel contrived and the story really doesn’t go anywhere—just lots of love/hate interactions between highly dysfunctional individuals.
