A mummified corpse, over half a century old, is found in the cellar of an abandoned building in a remote New Mexico ghost town. Corrie Swanson is assigned what seems to her a throwaway case: to ID the body and determine cause of death. She brings archaeologist Nora Kelly to excavate the body and lend her expertise to the investigation, and together they uncover something unexpected and shocking: the deceased apparently died in agony, in a fetal position, skin coming off in sheets, with a rictus of horror frozen on his face. Hidden on the corpse lies a 16th-century Spanish gold cross.

Publisher's Summary
Contest, the action-packed extravaganza that launched this international best-selling career, is vintage Reilly at his explosive best.
The New York Public Library. A silent sanctuary of knowledge; a 100-year-old labyrinth of towering bookcases, narrow aisles and long marble hallways. For Doctor Stephen Swain and his daughter, Holly, it is the site of a nightmare. Because for one night this historic building is to be the venue for a contest. A contest in which Swain is to compete - whether he likes it or not.The rules are simple: Seven contestants will enter, only one will leave. With his daughter in his arms, Stephen Swain is plunged into a terrifying fight for survival. The stakes are high, the odds brutal. He can choose to run, to hide or to fight - but if he wants to live, he has to win. For in this contest, unless you leave as the victor, you do not leave at all.

Never a dull moment
This book is for those who like faced paced, action, sci-fi. I like survival stories, competitions and alien interaction. This one ticks all the boxes. Nicely written, very well performed. Great story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Hard to put down. The story introduces impossible scenarios and then produces exciting explanations of the hero's way out. This is the first of the Matthew Reilly best sellers, and I'm glad I started with this one first. Have added the rest of his books to my wish list and look forward to reading them all. Makes me proud to be an Aussie like the author.

Scary, full on & exhausting. Terrific!
I totally got blown away with this story. Parts scared me, grossed me out & had me holding my breath on multiple occasions throughout. I actually read this book in one day, it was so jam packed with action & graphic details of how the main characters were going to solve each life & death moment they were thrust into. I'm totally exhausted & I'm sure I'll have a nightmare or two with how my imagination went into overdrive, whilst reading. That aside, I thoroughly enjoyed this story & can't wait to read & listen to more from Matthew Reilly.

Where does Contest rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One of the best, but that might be because I've read the book.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Contest?
The fight scenes between the main character and Belios
Which scene did you most enjoy?
Didn't have one that stood out
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
At the end when they are just sitting on the train. Filthy, tired and being completely ignored. No one knew what they had just been through.
Any additional comments?

Contest
At first I once thought the book had started and I started listening to the story I thought this book sounded ridiculous, so I persevered with it. After a while I started understanding the punch line of the Story, then I became intrigued with the story. I was so use to Matthew Reilly’s other Story books I thought it was going to intense like they were for the likes of Ice Station, Scarecrow, Temple etc... But it’s nothing like those story once I listened to the whole story. In the end it turned out to be a good Story line, Thanks Matthew Reilly for yet another great Audio Book. I’m still waiting for the next Jack West Jnr Audiobook Novel to be released as I have read all of the Jack West Series and all the Shane Schofield aka the “ Scarecrow “, I’m hoping there would be more of the Scarecrow to come as well as Jack West Jnr novel. Sean Mangan tells these stories with great pride, he is very well suited for telling these great stories of Matthew’s.

I can now see why it was self published. Badly written and characters reaction to the the situation of the plot was unrealistic. Great imagination is required to picture what is happening. Great concept though if only a better writer had written it.

So much room for improvement
This book was such a let down that I stopped listening after a few hours. I bought the book on special and still returning it.
There are major flaws in the character design as well, the main character is meant to be a health care professional but comes across as completely thick and needing the simplest things repeated to him.
The voice actor uses the same voice/tone/speech pattern for all male characters, dry and monotonous.

Love this Book 💖
This is my all time favourite book. Matthew your first book was awesome. The combination of Sci-fi and action/thriller is great. There are so many aspects of this book I enjoy and I have to get a hit of it every 6 months or so. An unexpected hero that I love. It is worth the read/listen if you like M. Reilly u have to listen to this or even if you don't give it a listen/read.
Have you ever thought of doing a sequel to this book??? Let us know when / if you do, I know it was a long time ago, but it would be awesome.
