A clever, magical coming-of-age story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Unreservedly yes! The books stands alone (though readers of other books from the Chrestomanci series, particularly The Lives of Christopher Chant, will appreciate the recurring characters), and I would recommend it to anyone with a taste for YA, or for fantasy in general. It's a well-written book, with good language, vivid characters I'd love to befriend, and a plot that comes together perfectly in a final, surprising - and funny - group confrontation.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Conrad's Fate?

The end, certainly, where all the different threads and characters finally come together in one place. Conrad's adventures with Christopher, however, were also both fun and memorable.

Which character – as performed by Gerard Doyle – was your favorite?

Conrad himself: he's an endearing character, and a believably 12-year old boy. Doyle's characterizations of some of the secondary characters, such as Mr. Amos and Mr. Prendergast, the butlers, were also excellent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely.

Any additional comments?

Recommended unreservedly: an excellent book that has received the audio treatment it merits.

A good read

Not her best in the series but definitely worth reading. The series consists of 4 books based in the same univers....sort of. It isn't necessary to read them in order to enjoy them although reading "A Charmed Life" will help you understand this book a bit better. I would recommend this book for both young adults and adults.

One of my favorites!

I am particularly fond of this book. Jones has such an unaffected, charming style of writing, and with her Chrestomanci books in particular she has a way of weaving whimsy and magic into even the mundane. I especially love how she portrays the world through Conrad's eyes, and he has long been one of my favorite fictional characters. As for the narrator, I wouldn't choose to listen to this book read by anyone else. I feel like Doyle does such an excellent job of portraying the personalities of each unique character, and the way he reads Jones's works meshes seamlessly with her style of writing. I only wish he would narrate more of her works, I would but every one. To me, Jones and Doyle are a perfect combination!

Conrad's fortune

What made the experience of listening to Conrad's Fate the most enjoyable?

I love the Chrestomanci series and each book has "a" Chrestomanci in it but it isn't always the same one. I was drawn in to see if Conrad would kill the person he didn't in his past life or not.

What other book might you compare Conrad's Fate to and why?

All of Diana Wynne Jones' books.

What about Gerard Doyle’s performance did you like?

I loved how he did the voices for all the characters. I especially love when he says nooOOO with his British accent.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed and cried. I feel like the relationship between the Goddest and Christopher is getting stronger. I would really like to have another book with them. It's so cute Christopher goes looking for her to save the day. I really hope the next book is about Conrad training at the Chrestomanci castle with Christopher and the Goddest.
