About this listen

Know That You Are Not Alone on This Journey

Adopting or fostering a child brings its own unique set of challenges only another parent facing the same uphill climb could possibly understand. From parenting children with traumatic pasts, to dealing with attachment issues, to raising a children with special needs, it can sometimes be a struggle just getting through the day.

Mike Berry knows the loneliness and isolation you can easily feel in your particular parenting role - because he's been there. He's still there, and he wants to give you the hope and encouragement you so desperately need. There are plenty of how-to guides out there on parenting, but this one-of-a-kind book is specifically designed to address your needs as a parent of an adopted or foster child. With a refreshing dose of honesty, empathy, and care, you'll discover you are definitely not alone on your journey, and God has a very special plan for you and your family.

This book was written from a very vulnerable yet comfortable place. The wisdom and insight shared will be helpful to adoptive, foster and even some biological parents.

Very well written, easy to follow and it inspired me into action.

This book should have the disclaimer "written by an adoptive parent that didn't understand trauma before making the conscious commitment to adopt." Then again, I'm not sure if that's the norm in the foster and adoption community like the prevalence of the savior complex in humanitarian and missionary work. People who have overcome the obstacles faced by children in these circumstances know it's hard and have a different perspective. This makes the book cringe worthy at times. However, it does give helpful information & reminds us that these trials are a chance to build love & compassion for ourselves and others. It's for things to be difficult and to have feelings about that. It's the response to the difficulty that matters, and rest and restoration is part of that.

BTW, the whole testing if people are safe and having a small circle of trusted people is exactly what minorities do in predominantly white environments. It's EXACTLY the same thing. And given many children in the foster and adoption programs are minorities, figure y'all should learn about that as well. #safespaces

I fostered to adopted my beautiful daughter, now almost 14. I've always leaned on the strict but loving side when raising her. I used to think she'd never cross me. Attitude, not doing what she's told, sure, but nothing major. Well yesterday she decided to run away🤦‍♂️. I was so angry, when I was looking for her, however this book was playing, and I was listing to Mr. Berry talking about how to approach your children. My rage totally went away, and regardless of all the hateful things she said when I found her, I stayed calm, and tried to listen to her. I was missing something, and she told me. Under the hateful words was a powerful message a child was trying to communicate, but since she doesn't have adult like communication skills, she did the only thing she knew how to do to send a message. God put this book in front of me, and it may have saved a life. Thank You Mike and Kristen Berry for opening up your life, to save ours!

This book gave me great encouragement. The “me too” “you are not alone” concepts are what I needed in my life right now.
