Publisher's summary

Never judge a man by his cover....

Society knows the affable Earl of Dunston for his flashy waistcoats and rapier wit. Lady Maureen Huxley knows him as Henry Thorpe, her best friend - an irresistibly kissable, strictly platonic friend. Which means her dreams of marriage, motherhood, part-time cookery, and full-time domestic bliss must be fulfilled elsewhere. But after three seasons and a parade of fickle suitors, Maureen's hopes are fading. Worse, she suspects Henry is to blame.

Never trust a man with too many secrets....

Years spent hunting his father's murderer through London's dark underworld have honed Henry Thorpe into a deadly blade with one purpose - catching a killer of fathomless evil. Nothing mattered more until Maureen Huxley came along. To keep her safe, he must keep her at arm's length. Yet he can't resist drawing her close, making her laugh, dreaming of doing wicked things to her lush body. Very well, perhaps he also dissuaded some of her suitors. But what's a little deception between friends?

Never provoke a man as dangerous as this one....

With his enemy growing bolder and Maureen contemplating marriage to another man, Henry is caught in the crossfire between his mission and his heart. Any move could exact a devastating cost. But losing the woman he loves is one price he refuses to pay.

Contains mature themes.

This is a GREAT story.

What a Revelation! We find out who the girl is (from book 3) that the villain had hidden away for so many years and left all his money too, and why he had her hidden away. Those of you who have read this series, know what I am talking about, and those of you who want to know will have 2 read it 2 find out. It is worth buying this book to find out. This love/mystery story is well written and is a great addition and a must read in this series. If you have not read it you are missing out on a good one. The hero is a spy of the first order and has almost been killed several time. He has put off marrying the women he really wants for several years because he dose not want anyone close to him to get hurt or killed, but he has run out of time. Girl friend has decided she is not going to wait any longer and has put her self on the market to get a husband. The man that wants her has it going on and has more to offer as the hero.

Probably my favorite

I love this story! It may be my favorite of the series. Henry is one of the very best heroes. Mary Sarah's narration is top notch. I adore her deep masculine voices, the way she talks slow and almost whispers. The way *Henry* says *pet* is so sensual.

Maureen is a great leading lady. This is a great story and a wonderful series. I highly recommend.

Very well done story with all the right ingredients

This series overall is enjoyable but this book in particular is one if not the best I’ve listened to so far (0.5 is my least favorite).

It’s a great story with intrigue, mystery, sexy times, humor, various types relationships so you are actually interested in finding out what’s going to happen.

A very enjoyable book.

My only quibble is with this narrator who tends towards breathiness, letting her sentences trail off making it difficult to hear at times, and other times adopts a lilting tone that I find annoying. But maybe that’s me. Otherwise she does the different voices well.

Great series

Lots of emotion for me in this one. I just wanted to smack the main female, Maureen. Good thing she lived in the 1800s, cuz girls today would eat her alive and take that hunky man from her. Lol
Really, it’s a great series and one I will definitely hear again and again. Loved all of it and thought I had it figured out and BAM! Not who I thought it was. While it has sexy scenes, it’s not as descriptive as the other books. Has a great story and most all the other friends (characters) are known or mentioned and also gives clues as to who will have a book in the series. Or at least that’s what I believe.

Another Good Story, But…

I wish Dunston had gotten a better story.
It is full of intrigue, a good mystery, and the return of many of the characters from previous books in this series! This book would be best enjoyed by reading book 2 and 3 to get a much deeper and richer back story.
Still, all in all, this was another winning book in a FANTASTIC series!

4 stars

Although it was very good it was a hairs breath shy of the previous books. But 4 stars is still worth it. I had read this book then listened to it on audio. Both versions were good.

The story held my interest from beginning to the end

The storyline was progressive and interesting. And the narrator was nothing short of superb in every book that she narrates.

The chickens come home to roost

“Henry Edward Fitzsimmons Thorpe!”
Henry has no one else to blame for the number of times he lands in “using his full name” hot water with Maureen. After all, he’s been hiding his identity and chasing all of her suitors off.

“Sooner or later the odds catch up with us all.”
This was my favorite of the Volume 2 collection (containing three series books and a novella) for the addition of a spy mystery. There is danger and death, but only as befits a romance book.
Dark, dangerous men give the most delicious sex scenes and these two give great “I’m so mad I could strangle you … or kiss you” moments.

“Mind your tongue!”
“You first!”
This book has the best balance of light and dark, danger and humor, and H/h versus extended cast focus. Maureen is a Huxley and several of the previous couples are back, in particular Jane & Harrison and Sarah & Colin. It’s not necessary to have listened to their stories, but it does add to the relationships here.
